These words rang in my ears the other week when I crashed a rehearsal of The Penny Seats' summer production Elektra (as adapted by Ann Arbor's own Anne Carson) for a sneak peek of the glorious mayhem that is sure to delight audiences at the West Park Band Shell July 10 - 26.

by Courtnie Mele - Apr 27, 2014

On April 26th, Roy Sexton held a book-signing/Q&A for his new book Reel Roy Reviews, Vol. 1: Keepin' It Real. With references to forgotten Broadway musicals and even more forgotten films (Buckaroo Banzai or Time Bandits, anyone?), analysis of his ongoing “war” with the Cher-army, many funny asides, boffo binge-book-buying by all in attendance, and a whole lot of zany fun, yesterday's book signing/singing event was a hit!

In Susie Duncan Sexton's follow-up to Secrets of an Old Typewriter, she offers her second essay collection of provocative, funny, and heartwarming/heartbreaking observations. Entitled Misunderstood Gargoyles & Overrated Angels, this volume celebrates the underdogs and the unappreciated among us... and sets its sights on the hypocritical and the hyped among us as well. Through the context of a life fully lived-with an affinity for pop culture, an aversion to small town small-mindedness, and a passion for animal rights-Susie weaves a rich tapestry of punditry and advocacy.

by Tyler Peterson - Jun 24, 2013

The Penny Seats third annual summer show at Ann Arbor's West Park opens on July 11th. This year, the troupe is proud to present Little Me, the farcical autobiography of Belle Poitrine, supposed star of stage, screen, and sinking ship. From her humble origins as Belle Schlumpfert on Drifter's Row, to her meteoric rise to wealth, culture, and social position, to her many mates and her one true love, all are here. Neil Simon's script is a scream (yes, Neil Simon wrote a musical!), and the music by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh sparkles. Better still, Penny Seat Roy Sexton will attempt a comic tour de force originated by Sid Caesar and designed just for this show: he will play no fewer than six characters. Check out a first look at the cast below!
