Vocalist Vanessa Perea Will Pay Tribute To Sarah Vaughan at December Luna Stage Concert
by A.A. Cristi
- Nov 17, 2016
In 2014, vocalist Vanessa Perea released her first solo album, Soulful Days, on the Zoho Music label. Jazz Times' Christopher Loudon wrote that her interpretation of the Richard Whiting/Johnny Mercer standard, 'Too Marvelous For Words', conveys 'a slithery sexiness worthy of Sarah Vaughan while weaving in some wickedly good scatting.' Jazzhistoryonline.com's Thomas Cunliffe has praised Perea's 'combination of confidence and maturity', predicting that she 'could become one of jazz's top vocalists in the near future.'
BWW Review: Alex Leonard and His Colleagues Mellow Midtown Saint Peter's Church in Midday Jazz Concert
by Alix Cohen
- Mar 17, 2016
Every time I attend something in jazz pianist Ronny Whyte's estimable weekly series at the welcoming, modern Saint Peter's Church (619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street), I'm glad I came. The place is airy, peaceful, and sunny with spacious pew and tiered seating. Acoustics are splendid. The audience is respectful. And they have Billy Strayhorn's piano.
Yesterday's easy-going hour featured Alex Leonard on piano and vocals (one forgets how fine a vocalist he is), David Kingsnorth on bass, and veteran Al Gafa on guitar.

BWW Review: Steve Ross and His Orchestra Bring Stylish RHYTHM AND ROMANCE to Birdland and Steal Hearts
by Alix Cohen
- Nov 18, 2015
Attending a Steve Ross show is often akin to time travel. The audience is transported back to eras when urbanity and dash were watchwords, when interpretation meant being as true to the period as the meaning of lyrics. The classy Mr. Ross, known primarily for iconoclastic solo performance, appeared at Birdland Monday night with a zealous 11-piece band helmed by long time confederate Brian Cassier. The joint was jumpin'.

BWW Reviews: New York's Cabaret Stars Shine Brightly in Emotional MARGARET WHITING Tribute Show at Carnegie Hall
by Stephen Hanks
- Jun 25, 2014
When Margaret Whiting died on January 10, 2011, the news was like a dagger into the heart of the New York cabaret community. Whiting was a beloved singer for almost seven decades, who seemingly delivered every American popular song ever written, conquered almost every musical art form--from Big Band to Country to Musicals to Cabaret, from radio to the recording studio. On top of all that, Whiting worked with and mentored many New York cabaret musical directors and performers, including the late Mary Cleere Haran and K.T. Sullivan, who along with Whiting's daughter Deborah, hosted a 90th birthday Whiting tribute show on Monday night at Carnegie Hall's elegant Weill Recital Hall. Presented by The Mabel Mercer Foundation, for which Sullivan is Artistic Director, It Might As Well Be Spring! A Celebration in Song of the Life of Margaret Whiting was an almost three-hour concert featuring two All-Star teams worth of cabaret stars spanning a few generations.
