BWW Review: Beautifully Crafted “Pride and Prejudice” at Great Lakes Theater
by Roy Berko
- Oct 8, 2018
Great Lakes Theater has found a perfect combination of scripts to start its 57th season. The fun, escapist juke box musical, 'Mamma Mia!,' had the audience excitedly on its feet for the extended curtain call. 'Pride and Prejudice,' the epic story of class-stratification and misunderstanding feelings in 19th century England, also had the audience on its feet at the end. This time, instead of dancing and singing, it was applause for a well-directed and performed staging.

Fearless, funny and utterly irresistible, Jane Austen's classic is sure to steal the hearts of audiences.

BWW Review: Compelling “The Scottish Play” (“Mac**th”) at Great Lakes Theater
by Roy Berko
- Apr 1, 2018
Theater people are superstitious! The practices that relate to the fears have various origins. For example, 'the ghost of Thespis (the first known actor in ancient Greece) is said to wreak havoc upon theaters all over the world. The ghost light tradition-leaving a single lit bulb upstage center when the theater is empty-is meant to ward off these mischievous specters.'

by Roy Berko
- Oct 9, 2017
Those who are afraid of seeing Shakespeare because of the oft abstract language and confusing plot twists should fear not. This production is a total delight, with a nice mash-up of comedy and outlandish farce, mixed in with a little lover's stardust. It's definite must see!

BWW Review: LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST - Lesser Script Done with Extended Farce at Great Lakes Theater
by Roy Berko
- Apr 12, 2016
LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, a production of which is now on stage at Great Lakes Theater, is one of Shakespeare's earliest plays. As such, some critics believe that it is the 'work of a playwright just learning his art.' Though many of Shakespeare's plays are brilliant and have effected the course of Western Literature, Shakespeare scholars tend to view this script as a minor work in the Bard's folio. It has never been one of the playwright's more popular works.

BWW Reviews: ISF DEATHTRAP
by Teresa Rodrick
- Jun 9, 2014
For this production of DEATHTRAP, you notice that it is a home. Maybe a summer or winter home, but definitely someone's house. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with weaponry: guns, knives, swords. It reminded me of the museum at the Tower of London. The Scenic Designer is Russell Matheny.
