There have only been 9 Abbots in the history of the Friars Club starting with George M. Cohan who held the position from 1907-1932. Then came: George Jessel, Milton Berle, Mike Todd, Joe E. Lewis, Ed Sullivan, Frank Sinatra, Alan King, and the current Abbot Jerry Lewis. The actor, singer, director, philanthropist and comic legend who passed away this year was saluted and given a heartfelt curtain call by The Friars last night. Our programming for our fourth inaugural season focuses on the importance of overcoming adversity, the fragility of mental health and the danger of repressed emotions.

The Bayou Theatre Company returns with its third season entitled 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Exploring the Complexities of Womanhood'. With a season focused on female-centered stories, the season will open with Lanie Robertson's riveting one woman play with music LADY DAY AT THE EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL, followed by PECONG by Steve Carter, a resetting of the myth of Medea.

Ann Hampton Callaway's new Thanksgiving week show at Feinstein's/54 Below (what has become an annual holiday appearance), Feminine Persuasion, celebrates women songwriters who excel at the craft, one of the few creative sectors where men have not held them back. Covering the waterfront, her selection includes, in part, Peggy Lee, whom she calls “the first singer/songwriter” (perhaps the first highly visible and successful one), Carolyn Lee “a secretary who didn't know how to take dictation,” “optimistic” Dorothy Fields--the first woman to win an Oscar for a song--and baby boomers Carole King and Joni Mitchell, and current pop star, Adele. “These women were/are trailblazers who broke through with their own voices.”

The Kimmel Center is proud to announce that the Board of Directors of Kimmel Center, Inc. elected David P. Holveck as its Chairman, effective July 1, 2014. Dave Holveck brings over 40 years of executive experience in long-term growth initiatives for Fortune 500 companies such as General Electric Company, Johnson & Johnson and most recently served as President, Chief Executive Officer of Endo Pharmaceuticals. He has been an active member of the Kimmel Center Board since 2012, serving most recently as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Holveck succeeds Paul A.Tufano as Chairman of the Kimmel's Board of Directors.
