'You don't know what a call is going to be like until you get there,' says Anna the paramedic. The same can be said of playwright Rosamund Small's new one-person drama Vitals, produced by Outside the March with support from Theatre Passe Muraille. This site-specific show about the arduous work of paramedics is not for the faint of heart. There are three ways in which Vitals is not easy for the audience. First, you don't just sit there; you are on-site and at various points you must be on your feet or climb stairs. Second, you are not pointed at a stage having the performance spoon-fed to you; for a period, you are swimming in the experience, which can be disorienting but also mind-expanding. Third, the subject matter-disturbing experiences that a paramedic encounters on the job-is traumatic even just to hear about.

TERMINUS wins big at this year's Toronto Theatre Critics' Awards, which were announced today (awards to be given out at a later date). The awards are determined by Toronto critics who represent five of the city's newspapers: The Globe and Mail (J. Terminus was the smash-hit of this year's Summerworks Festival and is now the inaugural presentation in the Off-Mirvish Season. Directed by Mitchell Cushman and written by Mark O'Rowe, the story is a unique type of 'Irish Rap Opera' which involves three interconnected tales told in a 'campfire' format. Starring Maev Beaty, Ava Jane Markus and Adam Kenneth Wilson, the show explores some dark and harrowing subject matter using descriptive rhyme.

Terminus was a smash-hit at last year's Summerworks Festival, and now it is the first offering in the inaugural Off-Mirvish Season. The new endeavour from Mivish Productions aims to showcase smaller, independent works to a larger audience within Toronto. BWW spoke to Terminus director Mitchell Cushman about the show, and about how he feels getting the chance to showcase it to a larger audience.

The Mirvish Second Stage Series will bring four exciting plays to Toronto audiences over the next year, and will be offered in a unique subscription series all its own. The inaugural season will feature three Canadian productions and a critically acclaimed one-man show fresh off The New York Musical Theatre Workshop and Edinburgh Fringe.

Outside the March, the creative force behind last year's Mr. Marmalade, is teaming up with Dora Award-winning performer David Ferry and Theatre Passe Muraille to present the Canadian Premiere of Mike Daisey's The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs. The production will premiere in Toronto in May 2012, directed by OtM Co-Artistic Director Mitchell Cushman.

In their sophomore season, Obstructed View Productions tackles David Mamet's classic play, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Despite being too young for the characters the talented cast give fine performances and the play retains its power. * * * ½ (out of five)
