BWW Review: THE PRODUCERS at Musical Theater Heritage

Great theater requires a willing suspension of disbelief. 'The Producers' by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan requires a willing embrace of 1940's Catskill schlock and shtick. That said, MTH's 'The Producers' is so much inspired silliness, so well performed, and so meticulously put together, it is tough to stop giggling and smirking and groaning at the awful, hysterical, politically in-correct, funny, one-liners. The Saturday night, Crown Center audience for 'The Producers' thoroughly embarrassed itself and was delighted to do so.
KCRep Kicks Off Season with World Premiere Musical

Kansas City Repertory Theatre launches its 2018/2019 season with the World Premiere musical, LAST DAYS OF SUMMER, September 7 - 30, 2018. LAST DAYS is based on the book by author Steve Kluger, who also wrote the book and lyrics for this production. LAST DAYS OF SUMMER features music by Grammy winner Jason Howland, is directed and choreographed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (Broadway's NEWSIES, KCRep's BETWEEN THE LINES), and is produced by special arrangement with Daryl Roth (Broadway's KINKY BOOTS and INDECENT, KCRep's BETWEEN THE LINES).

Underscore Theatre Company is pleased to present its 4th annual CHICAGO MUSICAL THEATRE FESTIVAL, created to showcase and support the growing field of musical theatre creators from Chicago and beyond. This year's Festival, featuring full productions of seven new musicals plus two staged readings, will play February 5 - 25, 2018 at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. Each full production will receive at least four performances during the Festival. Single tickets are currently available at www.cmtf.org. The press "Sneak Preview," featuring a sampling of songs from the 2018 Festival, is Monday, February 5 at 8 pm.

'The Ballad of Lefty and Crabbe' sparkles as a completely home- grown, home- performed, home-produced and expanded reboot to the 2015 Fringe Festival hit now enjoying its world premiere at The Living Room Theatre in the Kansas City Crossroads District through June 18. The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced the selections for the upcoming popular monthlyIndie Night and Art of the Real series. Spotlighting the best and boldest new wave of independent cinema, Indie Night keeps with the Film Society's tradition of supporting and showcasing emerging filmmakers. September's selection is Daniel Patrick Carbone's HIDE YOUR SMILING FACES and in October Indie Night will feature a special retrospective screening and also welcome back director Alex Rivera for SLEEP DEALER, which premiered at the 2008 edition of New Directors/New Films. This week's previously announced August Indie Night showcases Mike Ott's PEARBLOSSOM HWY tomorrow, on Tuesday, August 13 at 8:00PM, with the director in attendance.
AFI Fest Announces ‘Young Americans,' ‘New Auteurs’ 2012 Titles

The American Film Institute's AFI Fest 2012 has released the films that will be featured in the Young Americans and New Auteurs division at this year's festival. Young Americans features works by up-and-coming U.S. filmmakers, while New Auteurs highlights international first and second-time feature film directors. AFI Fest, 2012, sponsored by Audi, will take place November 1-8 in Hollywood.

Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, announced nominations this morning for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Eva Mendes and Jeremy Renner served as presenters and 2011 Spirit Awards host Joel McHale was also on hand. Nominees for Best Feature include 127 Hours, Black Swan, Greenberg, The Kids Are All Right and Winter's Bone.
