The Writers Guild of America, West and the Writers Guild of America, East today announced nominations for outstanding achievement in television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.

Chris Messina to Star in 'Devil'

Broadway's Chris Messina (Salome) has been cast to star in 'Devil' based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan. The film will be directed by John Erick and Drew Dowdle with a script by Brian Nelson. Filming will begin in Toronto in late October.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival will launch the Black Swan Lab for New Work on July 7, 2009, running through October 31. The Lab will provide approximately 390 hours of development time in 2009 and offer a shifting menu of developmental activities, including actor-driven work, work that may include on-going development but no audience component, and work that is shared in-house.

South Coast Repertory will present The Brand New Kid, a musical lesson in tolerance and acceptance, adapted from Emmy Award-winning author Katie Couric's book, as part of its Theatre for Young Audience (TYA) series. Directed by Shelley Butler, with book by Melanie Marnich, music by Michael Friedman and lyrics by both, The Brand New Kid will run May 29 through June 14 on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Low-priced previews are available May 29 - June 5. Opening day is June 6. Press performance is May 31 at 2:00 p.m. All children who attend the 11:00 a.m. Target Family Performance on Saturday, June 6 will receive a free gift. The quirk-fest 'Quake' and the inter-generational study of three women 'Eleemosynary' are being staged this weekend at The University of the Arts. Special guests in attendance will include 'Quake' writer Melanie Marnich and 'Eleemosynary' writer Lee Blessing, who just happen to be husband and wife. After taking in their plays, they will take center stage with an open forum and post-show discussions.
