BWW Review: Gunderson's EMILIE Comes to Life in TWTP Production
by Jeffrey Ellis - Feb 21, 2016

Evelyn O'Neal Brush's bravura performance is reason enough to see Tennessee Women's Theater Project's production of Emilie: La Marquise du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight, but clearly it's Lauren Gunderson's play itself that should sell tickets. Emilie (as we will refer to the play from here on out - at least to the conclusion of this review) is an engaging treatise on the life and times of the mathematician, physicist, writer and critic, whose supreme intellect and prodigious literary output during the Age of the Enlightenment made her both notorious and admired at a time when women were thought of primarily as chattel.

MR. JINGLE'S CHRISTMAS CLAUSE Next Up at Gaslight Dinner Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Nov 19, 2015

Gaslight Dinner Theatre continues its 15th Anniversary Season with its 72nd show - the regional premiere of Mr. Jingle's Christmas Clause, written and created by artistic director Greg Frey, running November 19-December 19 in Dickson at Freed-Hardeman University's Renaissance Center.

BWW Review: Lauren Gunderson's THE TAMING From TWTP
by Jeffrey Ellis - Oct 6, 2015

It's all in the timing. No matter if you're delivering a joke, performing a new play or just putting something noteworthy out into the ether, the key to success is often just a matter of good timing. Case in point: the recently crowned Miss America 2016 came into the pageant as Miss Georgia - and in Lauren Gunderson's play, The Taming (now onstage at Nashville's Z. Alexander Looby Theatre in the "first east of the Rockies" production from Tennessee Women's Theater Project), we are treated to the "art imitates life" scene in which Miss Georgia becomes Miss America.

BWW Reviews: A CLOSER WALK WITH PATSY CLINE
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 5, 2015

That will also explain my rapturous response to the performance of A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline, a dramatized tribute to the country music superstar that opened at Dickson's Gaslight Dinner Theater on Thursday, June 4, running for a much-too-short two weekends at what was once known as The Renaissance Center.

BWW Reviews: Chaffin's Barn's A CHRISTMAS CAROL Rings in the Holiday Season
by Jeffrey Ellis - Nov 21, 2014

Funny and irreverent, Chaffin's Barn's A Christmas Carol-featuring a witty new adaptation by Lydia Bushfield-gives audiences the perfect entree into the whole crazy-wonderful holiday season, replete with sentimental carols, fruitcake jokes, horrid Christmas sweaters and Warren Gore on his knees.

Photo Coverage: Tennessee's Theaterati Celebrate Halloween 2012
by Jeffrey Ellis - Nov 1, 2012

Ah, Halloween...the theaterati's favorite holiday (right after Tony Awards Day and, in Tennessee of course, First Night Day!)...gives everyone the opportunity to show off their inner characters and unknown doppelgangers. So how did Tennessee's theater types celebrate the day? Dress up with some place to go...

BWW Reviews: Whittaker Leads A Charmed Production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF at Chaffin's Barn
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jun 2, 2012

There comes a moment late in Act Two when Tevye, the beleaguered dairyman at the center of Fiddler on the Roof, remembers his daughters in childhood and laments the loss of his beloved "Chavaleh" to marriage to a gentile, which completely encapsulates the joy and the sadness that permeates this classic work of the musical theater. Derek Whittaker, playing the role of a lifetime as he leads the cast of Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre's new production of the Jerry Bock/Sheldon Harnick/Joseph Stein musical, is at his best in this scene, artfully blending his finely honed comic sensibilities with a genuine pathos that creates a heart-tugging moment that is genuinely effective.

BWW Reviews: Osborne & Eppler's SOUTHERN FRIED NUPTIALS Walks Down the Aisle in Bethlehem UMC Premiere
by Jeffrey Ellis - Apr 15, 2012

Granted, most of my research can be credited to two plays by J. Dietz Osborne and Nate Eppler (known professionally as the eponymously named Osborne and Eppler, in the spirit of Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kaufman and Hart and George and Ira…Gershwin…which sorta ruins the sound of my sentence, but what can you do?), an impressive and noteworthy Nashville playwriting team, who seemingly have cornered the theatrical market on such Dixiefied ceremonies and celebrations in their comedies Southern Fried Funeral (which was debuted by Franklin's Bethlehem Players in 2010) and Southern Fried Nuptials (now onstage at Bethlehem Methodist Church in its world premiere production). I'll be sure to include them in the footnotes when my findings are published.

BWW Reviews: MAS Nashville Shakes Off the Malaise with CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY HANGOVER
by Jeffrey Ellis - Dec 29, 2011

Each one a force of nature in her own right, the five women of MAS Nashville unleashed their superpowers and talents upon a Nashville audience for the third time this week with their Christmas Holiday Hangover, a fast-paced (if over-long) tribute to the holiday season that allowed each of the women her moment in the spotlight and which proved, once again, that the quintet know exactly what their audience wants.
