Sure, Broadway is traditionally known for its glitz and glamour, but New York audiences have never shied away from socially relevant theatre, either. And while controversial issues are more frequently discussed Off-Broadway, 2018 saw a great many political and social themes brought up throughout Manhattan's stages. So here are ten times New York theatre tackled political and social issues in 2018

The gifts have been opened, the feasts have been eaten and the merriment has been had. As the holiday season comes to a close and we countdown the final hours of the year, we're getting ready to ring in 2019 by looking back.

Stand up, be visible, be present as 92Y's Fierce Todays celebrates a queer-inclusive Shabbat dinner today, November 30 with special guest Kate Bornstein - actress, writer, activist, and trailblazer. Kate whose Gender Outlaw is one of the most iconic books on gender identity, shares ideas, conversation, and fun while keeping the essence of Shabbat alive. Kate is joined by Phillip Picardi, editor-in-chief of OUT Magazine. Activist and Jewish educator Abby Stein helps lead and welcome in Shabbat. Break bread (or challah), celebrate self-love, welcome Shabbat, expand your community, and join us for a night to remember. This dinner - with kosher-style menu exclusively curated by The Eddy - is open to all. Beer and wine included.

Manhattan Theatre Club's American premiere of The Nap, written by Olivier Award nominee Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan (Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes; Rabbit Hole; Proof) is playing its final two weeks of performances. The play must close on Sunday, November 11th at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street).

Manhattan Theatre Club will "Trans Visibility in the Theatre," a panel directly following the Sunday, November 4th matinee of The Nap. Come to an open discussion about increasing trans presence in the theatre, with panelists including Alexandra Billings (The Nap, "Transparent"), Kate Bornstein (Straight White Men, "I Am Cait"), Will Davis (India Pale Ale, Men On Boats), Alexa Fogel ("Pose" Casting Director), Bianca Leigh (The Nap, Transamerica), and Marquise Vilson (Charm). They will discuss how the arts industry can sustain and further the current push for greater trans presence and representation.

Producer Diana DiMenna (The Great Comet, Three Tall Women) is proud to present the return engagement of The Public Theater production of Black Light. Performances began at the Greenwich House Theater (27 Barrow Street) on September 24 and will continue through December 31, with an opening night set for October 10.

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Straight White Men will conclude its limited run today, September 9. The play began previews at the Hayes Theater (240 West 44th Street) on Friday, June 29, 2018 and officially opened on Broadway on July 23, 2018. Young Jean Lee's dark comedy, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, stars Kate Bornstein, Josh Charles, Ty Defoe, Armie Hammer, Stephen Payne and Paul Schneider.

Trans performer and activist Kate Bornstein is currently lighting up the Broadway stage with her electric energy in Second Stage's Straight White Men. Despite her unquestionable talent, however, she was recently interrupted by a heckler while giving her opening monologue.

There was plenty to admire when playwright/director Young Jean Lee's STRAIGHT WHITE MEN opened at The Public Theater in November of 2014.  Those familiar with the exceedingly non-traditional work of the Obie-honoree, whose past dramatic choices have included inserting a scene from 'Sesame Street' about Mr. Hooper's death into a play about King Lear and having silent nude performers interact with audience members to explore the boundaries of comfort zones may have chuckled a bit at the thought of her stepping into theatrical territory more or less defined in this country by the naturalistic classics of dramatists like Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill.
