May 15, 1962-Students at the University of Mississippi rioted over the lack of equal rights for black students. April 13, 1964-Riots erupted in Los Angeles regarding discriminatory ways of how police treated African Americans.

William Shakespeare's famed star-crossed lovers bare their passion Uptown this summer as The Classical Theatre of Harlem (Ty Jones, producing artistic director; David Roberts, managing director) presents Romeo n Juliet at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park. Justin Emeka, who edited and adapted the tragedy to bring the colorful characters of Harlem to life, returns for the second year in a row as director. Performances, which are free and open to the public, run through this Sunday, July 27.

The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) will celebrate Opening Night of its production of the William Shakespeare classic Romeo n Juliet, directed and adapted by Justin Emeka. The show will bring the colorful characters of Harlem and the African Diaspora to life. Emeka returns for the second year in a row as director. In Romeo n Juliet, soulful music, verse, movement and dance-hall rhythms provide the backdrop for a community suffering from internal conflict. Performances, which are free and open to the public, run from July 5 through 27.

A Midsummer Night's Dream, William Shakespeare's popular story of illusive and abiding love, opened Saturday to cheers and a robust crowd at Harlem's Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park. The show, produced by the Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) (Producing Artistic Director, Ty Jones), is directed by CTH Artistic Associate and Oberlin College Professor of Theater and Africana Studies Justin Emeka and runs Tuesdays through Sundays at 7:30 pm through July 20. Avery Brooks, the distinguished stage, film and television actor known for his celebrated performances in roles from the classics to science fiction, will portray one of the American theater's most tragic figures, Willy Loman, in a radical new interpretation of Arthur Miller's modern classic, Death of a Salesman from Sept. 18 to 21 at Oberlin College's Hall Auditorium in Oberlin, Ohio.
