BWW Reviews: Catastrophic Theatre's A VERY TAMARIE CHRISTMAS Is a Roller Coaster of Thrills and Mirth
by Nyderah Williams
- Jul 23, 2014
Tamarie Cooper gives Houston Christmas in July with A VERY TAMARIE CHRISTMAS and it is definitely a treat! She is at it again with her original summer musical, and this year with a book by Patrick Reynolds, music by Miriam Daly and Joe Folladori, and lyrics by Tamarie Cooper, Miriam Daly, Joe Folladori, Miki Johnson, and Patrick Reynolds, she has conceived an effervescent spectacle full of mirth and some of that good old Christmas spirit. It is never early to get in the mood for one of the great holidays ever, right?
BWW Reviews: Catastrophic Theatre's MIDDLETOWN is Darkly Comic and Philosophical
by David Clarke
- May 25, 2014
Will Eno, who is currently enjoying his Broadway debut with THE REALISTIC JONESES at the Lyceum Theatre, won the 2010 Horton Foote Prize for Promising New American Play with his darkly comedic musings on the lives we lead between birth and death in his play MIDDLETOWN. With a solid Regional Premiere, The Catastrophic Theatre is gifting Houston audiences with a chance to experience the wry, philosophic work that celebrates the mundane.
BWW Reviews: The Catastrophic Theatre's MARIE AND BRUCE is Gut Wrenching Dark Comedy
by David Clarke
- Nov 24, 2013
In 1999 Jason Nodler directed Tamarie Cooper and Charles Scott as the titular characters in Infernal Bridegroom's production of Wallace Shawn's MARIE AND BRUCE. Celebrating 20 years of Jason Nodler and Tamarie Cooper making theatre together and the fifth anniversary of The Catastrophic Theatre, the company is closing their 2013 season with a revival of their acclaimed production of MARIE AND BRUCE. Jason Nodler, Tamarie Cooper, and Charles Scott are all returning to the production in their previous roles, and each ensures that Houston audiences are gifted with an incredible night of theatre.
BWW Reviews: The Catastrophic Theatre's THE PINE - A Modern Take on Purgatory
by David Clarke
- Oct 3, 2013
When attending a production at The Catastrophic Theatre, I always know I am in for a journey. My favorite aspect of this group is that each and every one of their productions is a risk-taking endeavor, guaranteeing Houston audiences access to fresh, cutting-edge presentations of theatrical craftsmanship. Their current production, the World Premiere of Mickle Maher's THE PINE was commissioned by The Catastrophic Theatre and funded in part by a grant awarded by The MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Unfortunately, THE PINE wasn't to my liking, but the opportunity to see something crafted with this company in mind is reason enough for anyone to attend a performance.

BWW Reviews: Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company's FOXFINDER Brims With Insight and Intrigue
by David Clarke
- Aug 20, 2013
For me, the appeal of avant-garde pieces of theatre is never knowing exactly what you're in for when the houselights dim and the show begins. For Houston audiences, Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company specializes in these kinds of productions, and their current presentation of Dawn King's FOXFINDER is no different. The play is set in a somewhat dystopian England. Heavy rains, floods, and illness have plagued the Covey farm for about six months and caused them to fall behind their government mandated production schedule. William Bloor, a foxfinder, is sent to the farm to investigate if Judith and Samuel Covey are suffering from contamination. What transpires during William Bloor's visit to the Covey farm invites audiences to explore the power of propaganda and belief as the characters' lives are permanently altered. The absorbing drama was the winner of the 2011 Papatango writing competition and earned Dawn King the Most Promising Playwright award at the 2012 Off West End Awards.
BWW Reviews: TCT's Impressive WAITING FOR GODOT is Absurdly Hilarious, Dark
by David Clarke
- Mar 24, 2013
The Catastrophic Theatre(TCT) opened their new season at their new Catastrophic Theatre space with an astounding production of Samuel Beckett's stark tragicomedy WAITING FOR GODOT. The company has used the performance space in the past in collaboration with DiverseWorks, but the 1119 East Freeway location is now solely theirs, giving them a fantastic home to present their fascinating work.
