BWW Feature: Intellectual Masturbation (or, The Classical Music Grammy Nominations)
by Cole Grissom
- Nov 30, 2017
The Grammy nominations are here! It's such a fun awards show, chock-full of accolades for mediocre pop songs sung by artists with nodules bigger than my fist-a true example of folks living the American Dream. Each year I hope for the best, thinking that, maybe, the nominating committee, or the performers, will surprise me-flipping the script on my shockingly low expectations. This year, to see if they'd accomplished that feat, I headed over to the Grammy's website to peruse the list of nominees.

Messiah has become a Christmas tradition, even though in 1742 it was introduced as a work commemorating Easter. A soaring showpiece for chorus, soloists and orchestra, considered one of the most majestic compositions in Western music, Messiah is a soul-stirring way to celebrate Advent. This special performance also features soprano Erin Wall, mezzo-soprano Nancy Maultsby, tenor Miles Mykkanen, and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel.

BWW Review: Canadian Opera Company's ARABELLA Sparkles in Every Way
by Taylor Long
- Oct 6, 2017
Swanky sets, shimmering voices, sumptuous costumes - it all sparkles when met with sublime Strauss. The Canadian Opera Company presents the Canadian premiere of ARABELLA, a lyric comedy by Richard Strauss. A co-production with Santa Fe Opera and Minnesota Opera, ARABELLA is sung in German with English surtitles, the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal still resonating humorously against Strauss' score. Director Tim Albery has created a fine production, where every detail brims with elegance.
