Angels in America is considered by many to be the seminal play on America at the end of the twentieth century-not the least of which because it features the lawyer Roy Cohn. Cohn, who served as Joseph McCarthy's chief counsel during the Senator's Communist witch hunt that terrorized many in the artistic community and provided the inspiration for Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Cohn also served as the attorney for high-level members of the mafia, and, perhaps most relevant to today's current political environment, worked as Donald Trump's lawyer during the 1970s and 1980s. 

The Board of Directors of The Old Globe today announced the departure of Managing Director Michael G. Murphy, who has accepted an appointment as the President and CEO of Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, New York.

The Old Globe and the San Diego Public Library were selected last year to co-host the only stop in California for FIRST FOLIO! THE BOOK THAT GAVE US SHAKESPEARE, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library, a national traveling exhibition organized by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

The Old Globe's Annual Meeting was held on Monday, February 1, on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. After a reception in the Jane and Victor Ottenstein Lobby, outgoing Old Globe Board Chair Elaine Bennett Darwin welcomed the Board of Directors and guests and announced the newly elected Board and Executive Committee members, including her successor as Board Chair, Vicki L. Zeiger.

Over 300 guests attended The Old Globe's 2015 Gala, "Club 3515," celebrating the Globe's 80th Anniversary, on July 25 on the Globe's historic campus in Balboa Park. The Old Globe has announced an extra-special appearance-an hour-long interview/conversation with one of America's great comic playwrights, Ken Ludwig, familiar to millions for Lend Me a Tenor and Crazy for You-on Sunday, July 26 at 5:30 p.m. prior to the 7:00 p.m. preview of his new and very popular play, Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.

The Old Globe's presentation of Kiss Me, Kate, the classic musical comedy featuring a book by Sam and Bella Spewack and an iconic score by Cole Porter, will now add a week by popular demand and run through August 9 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Tickets for the extension will go on sale this Sunday, July 12 at noon.

The first Globe for All free Shakespeare tour will begin today, October 28 and will culminate in three low-cost performances on November 7 - 9 in the Globe's Hattox Hall, part of the Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.

The Old Globe invites your participation and coverage as it begins presenting shows through an exciting new producing platform, Globe for All. This free-of-charge tour of a professional production of Shakespeare will allow the theatre to serve more communities throughout San Diego by collaborating with a diverse range of local organizations. Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein directs the first production, Shakespeare's fascinating romance All's Well That Ends Well. He has cast local professional actors, including recent graduates of the Old Globe/University of San Diego Graduate Theatre Program. Preview performances run Feb. 8 - Feb. 12. The Old Globe today announced the launch of The Old Globe Community Voices, a series of workshops dedicated to the creation and presentation of short plays by adult residents of San Diego County. Community Voices is the centerpiece of The Old Globe Residency Project, an artistic initiative offering three avenues of engagement for underserved communities. Funded by a two-year, $500,000 grant from The James Irvine Foundation, the Residency Project builds upon the Globe's earlier Southeastern San Diego Residency Project by expanding the definition of "community" to include groups defined by shared experience, geography, demographics, identity, profession or other characteristics. In addition to Community Voices, The Residency Project also provides free admission to Globe productions for underserved communities and paid internships for young adults.
