Jamey Morrill Presents 'Theory of Everything' at Yellow Peril Gallery, 11/21
by Christina Mancuso - Oct 4, 2013

Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present 'theory of everything,' a 55% facetious, 45% serious exploration of existence by Providence-based sculptor Jamey Morrill, opening Thursday, November 21, 2013, during Gallery Night Providence. The title 'theory of everything' implies that Jamey Morrill will be revealing the mystery of existence and the answer to everyone's burning questions with his wood and thread sculptures. 'Nope,' says Morrill. 'Super sorry about that.' He explains: 'Instead, I am acknowledging that after years of wondering and searching for the meaning behind all that is, I am still wondering and searching. I feel no closer to answers.' And questions do abound, says Morrill: 'Does this mean that the quest itself is the answer? Is the act of turning over every stone itself the ultimate end? Is this grace, the unified theory, or enlightenment?' The sculptures featured in 'theory of everything' will have a clarity aesthetically, but an ambiguity philosophically. They will be evocative but not representational. 'So, when I call the wall pieces in the show 'Landscape Sculptures,' I am being intentionally vague,' says Morrill. 'I want these sculptures to be landscapes of the mind, rather than copies of any external reality.' The opening reception for 'theory is everything' is Thursday, November 21, from 5PM - 9PM during Gallery Night Providence. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, January 12, 2014. This is Morrill's second exhibition at Yellow Peril Gallery. About Jamey Morrill Jamey Morrill is a Providence-based sculptor and adjunct professor of art at Rhode Island College in Providence, RI. In recent years Morrill's sculpture has become increasingly sprawling and site-specific, with emphasis on mass-produced materials and organic forms. Often using commonplace materials, such as plastic bottles, chicken wire, and duct tape, Morrill constructs sculptures that are outwardly cerebral and systematic but that are fundamentally random and irrational. Morrill recently completed a residency at Fountainhead in Miami and was nominated for the Rappaport Prize from the DeCordova Museum in 2010 and The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant in 2009. Previous select solo and group exhibitions include: Yellow Peril Gallery, Providence (2012), Locust Projects, Miami (2011 & 2012), Curfman Gallery at Colorado State University (2011), Maya Allison Projects (2010), Aqua Art Fair, Miami (2009) and David Winton Bell Gallery (2005). He received his M.F.A. in Sculpture from Indiana University, Bloomington in 2002 and his B.A in Art History from Bowdoin College in 1992. Governors Island Art Fair 2013: 'balance between' by Lisa Perez, Presented by Yellow Peril Gallery
by Robert Diamond - Sep 4, 2013

Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present 'balance between,' a special exhibition featuring recent work from Providence artist Lisa Perez in Building 4A at Nolan Park during the 6th Annual Governors Island Art Fair 2013. Perez will be presenting new mixed media sculptural works that 'embrace a tension between gestural expression and minimalism' by using ambient and artificial light to cast shadows and add dimension to the subtle works on paper and wood. Working with various materials and methods, Perez's art embraces an ambiguity that confronts the defined boundaries between painting, sculpture and installation. Her abstractions evolve from a perspective that recognizes our limited attention spans in a hyper-speed culture, where much slips into the margins of our everyday experience. The work beckons a slowing down, a nod to the appreciation of paying attention. With this focus there is the possibility of a heightened awareness of the elasticity of time and a recognition of the power in the seemingly mundane. The 6th Annual Governors Island Art Fair is Yellow Peril Gallery's art fair debut. Other artists affiliated with Yellow Peril exhibiting solo presentations at GIAF include Raquel Paiewonsky, Rodrigo Nava and Kathryn Parker Almanas. The Providence-based contemporary art gallery will present as one of 15 Breeder Program galleries at SCOPE Miami Beach in December 2013. About Lisa Perez Lisa Perez has exhibited at such venues as the Drawing Center (New York), the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard, the Headlands Center for the Arts (Sausalito, CA), 5 Traverse (Providence, RI), David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University, a solo show at the Dorsch Gallery (Miami), and most recently, The RISD Museum as part of its 'Locally Made' survey of local artists. Perez received her M.F.A. from the University of California-Berkeley. For more info about Lisa Perez, visit http://lisaperezstudio.com. About Governors Island Art Fair Governors Island Art Fair is organized by 4heads, a New York-based arts organization that specializes in developing unique environments for the purposes of exhibition, education and artistic creation. 4heads' programs are tailored to serve the under-resourced, attracting hidden culture and fostering community through collaborative expression. Just when you thought it was safe to go to the theater once again, we welcome you to the debut installment of Music City Confidential, all the news that's fit to print (or not-depending on your perspective) from Nashville's ever-growing, ever-fascinating (okay, so we obviously don't have enough to occupy ourselves) live theater industry (we're trying that out-does it work? Let us know, theaterati!) Here amid the florid prose and flowery praise, you'll find all the stories that don't quite fit elsewhere, some of 'em kind of gossipy, some of 'em stone-cold serious, some of 'em just lists of names you need to know. You'll also find photos from our new "Intermission@" series, details about the latest cast parties and various and sundry minutiae-the veritable flotsam and jetsam-from backstage, onstage, offstage and beyond…
