BWW Reviews: TURN OF THE SCREW as Told Through a Horror Movie Lens
by Scott Frost - Feb 26, 2013

New York City Opera's production of Britten's chamber opera 'The Turn of the Screw' opened Sunday afternoon to a full house at Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House as the Prologue, played by Dominic Armstrong, fills us in on the back story as it is played out onstage. The stark setting with desk and chair and overhead fluorescent lighting sets the mood to which the score builds upon throughout the prologue. We watch the Governess in an interview with a man to care for two orphaned children who we find out to be his niece and nephew. After accepting the position to help 'such a busy man', we eerily follow the Governess, played by Sara Jakubiak, down the country road to her new life. The scene is now set for Act I of this production which director, Sam Buntrock, describes as having been drawn 'from iconic films such as The Shining, The Exorcist and Poltergeist.

by BWW News Desk - Oct 19, 2012

Houston Grand Opera, with Music Director Patrick Summers and Managing Director Perryn Leech, announces its 2012-13 season, headlined by four new productions. The first of these is Puccini's La boheme, which launches the new season with a new staging by award-winning British director John Caird. To honor 2013's joint bicentennials of Wagner and Verdi, the coming season juxtaposes Tristan und Isolde - starring Ben Heppner and Nina Stemme in a new contemporary staging by Christof Loy - with a revival of Steven Lawless's unforgettable take on Il trovatore. British conductor Trevor Pinnock leads a strong international cast in Mozart's ensemble masterpiece Don Giovanni, while Francesca Zambello's new production of Kern and Hammerstein's Show Boat brings together stars of Broadway and the opera house in a celebration of America's own contribution to the art. For a more intimate experience, Daniela Barcellona and Lawrence Brownlee star in Rossini's dramma giocoso, The Italian Girl in Algiers.

BWW Reviews: The Rep Stages Lovely DADDY LONG LEGS
by Chris Gibson - Oct 13, 2012

With there being so much negativity in the world these days, it's nice to see a play, especially a musical, that has such a sweet disposition. DADDY LONG LEGS (book by John Caird with music and lyrics by Paul Gordon) is just such a production, telling a good story with a fine score, and doing so without any of the ranting and raving we've come to expect from so many modern musicals. The Rep's presentation is splendidly staged and performed, and leaves its audience with a decidedly positive vibe.
