Musician and composer Damien Sneed pays homage to his mentor Aretha Franklin tonight, Monday Nights with WBGO: 'Damien Sneed Presents A Tribute to Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul' Monday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, located in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, on Broadway at 60th Street, New York City.

On Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m., Harry Bicket conducts Handel's Semele at Carnegie Hall with acclaimed baroque orchestra The English Concert. In this concert presentation, soprano Brenda Rae performs the title role, joined by mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong (Juno/Ino), bass Soloman Howard, (Cadmus/Somnus), tenor Benjamin Hulett (Jupiter), countertenor Christopher Lowrey (Athamas), soprano Ailish Tynan (Iris), tenor Brian Giebler (Apollo), and bass-baritone Joseph Beutel (Priest), along with The Clarion Choir (Steven Fox, Artistic Director).

Beginning June 5 and continuing through the 29th, San Francisco Opera presents a trio of extraordinary lyric works Georges Bizet's Carmen, George Frideric Handel's Orlando and Anton n Dvo k's Rusalka featuring powerful leading women in the title roles. Spanning three centuries and sung in French, Italian and Czech, the 2019 Summer Season repertory will occasion the Company debuts of four conductors, including two women, in productions that are new to the War Memorial Opera House stage. Some casting updates for the repertory were announced today and additional casting of supporting roles will be released at a future date.

The Oakland Symphony Orchestra will present its 22nd Annual David Daniels Young Artists Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10 in Varner Recital Hall on OU's campus.

San Francisco Opera today announced it is removing countertenor David Daniels from the role of Medoro in the Company's June 2019 presentation of Handel's Orlando. The decision to part ways with Mr. Daniels, for business and professional reasons, was reached after considerable deliberation given the serious allegations of sexual assault, an on-going police investigation and a lawsuit filed against the American opera singer. While these situations remain under investigation, San Francisco Opera is unable to present the artist on the War Memorial Opera House stage.

It wouldn't be odd to presume that a one-woman show about America's most famous sex therapist would be mostly about...well, sex. While sex and the role it plays in our lives is certainly a part of the story, Becoming Dr. Ruth, currently playing at JCC's CenterStage, is much deeper than that. It examines history, religion, family, love, loss, intimacy, and the many forces that shaped the life and career of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the German-born, Jewish immigrant who survived the Holocaust and went on to become a pop culture icon, media personality, and author.

San Francisco Opera announces updated casting for its 96th Season, which opens Friday, September 7, with the double bill of Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, and two galas, Opera Ball 2018: ¡Viva La Noche! and the BRAVO! CLUB Opening Night Gala. The 2018-19 Season features eight productions that are new to the War Memorial Opera House stage, including a new staging of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca and the West Coast premiere of Jake Heggie's It's a Wonderful Life. Highlights also include Placido Domingo in Concert on October 21 and a roster of returning artists, debuting soloists and conductors.

After two days of semifinals and finals concerts at the University of Michigan, the Aizuri Quartet has won the $100,000 M-Prize for the third annual chamber arts competition hosted by the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance.  

Michigan Opera Theatre is pleased to announce the 2018-2019 Michigan Opera Theatre Studio Artists. The roster includes the return of tenor Michael Day and baritone Harry Greenleaf. Joining them are soprano Cheyanne Coss, mezzo-soprano Katherine DeYoung and bass Allen Michael Jones.

Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) announces an exciting concert and reception featuring internationally acclaimed countertenor John Holiday on Sunday, April 8 at 7:00pm. Featuring an eclectic mix of opera, jazz and gospel selections, the concert will be held in the sanctuary at Plymouth Church in Des Moines. Scott Arens, DMMO's director of marketing and public relations, will be joining Mr. Holiday at the piano for the performance.

Conducted by music director Martin Pearlman, the season is anchored by a powerful new performing version of Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea by Pearlman. The season includes the Boston Baroque debuts of countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and soprano Layla Claire, with performances by renowned Baroque interpreters such as David Daniels, Nicholas Phan, Amanda Forsythe, and clarinetist Eric Hoeprich.

In this concert presentation, countertenor Iestyn Davies performs the title role joined by sopranos Jane Archibald (Armida) and Joélle Harvey (Almirena), bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni (Argante), mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke (Goffredo), and countertenors Jakub Józef Orli?ski, (Eustazio), and James Hall (A Christian Magician).

Four of Oakland University's most promising music students will perform with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO) during the 21st Annual David Daniels Young Artists Concert, which takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 in Varner Recital Hall on OU's campus.

The Department of Chamber Music at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance has announced the 2018 edition of the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition, featuring a grand prize of $100,000, the largest cash award for any chamber arts competition in the world.
