BWW Review: SHREK: THE MUSICAL at Albuquerque Little Theatre

It's hard to be an ogre - the whole world fears your green skin and gruff exterior, you're banished to live in a smelly swamp, and now, to top things off, the ruler of Duloc has thrown a whole bunch of fairytale freaks your way to crowd your space. What's an ogre to do? Such is the predicament that begins SHREK: The Musical, playing now through March 31 at Albuquerque Little Theater.

Though there's nary a mention of snowfall or jingle bells in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, the abundance of joy and good clean humor, not to mention some terrific voices, in the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players' frothily charming production of G&S's 1879 romantic romp makes it a grand choice for holiday entertainment.

Even though Sheldon Harnick was playing the violin in his High School's Gilbert & Sullivan productions… 'I could still hear the lyrics', he wrote in his alumni magazine of Northwestern University. Harnick continued, 'At that time I was turned on by the patter songs, so I began to familiarize myself with Gilbert and Sullivan. I was more fascinated by the virtuosity than anything else. Little by little, I also realized what a fine poet Gilbert was and how imaginative he was, even in the slower songs. So he became an enormous influence.'
