Casting Announced For THE CRUCIBLE at Gettysburg Community Theatre
by A.A. Cristi - Sep 27, 2017

Gettysburg Community Theatre, located at 49 York Street within the first block of Lincoln Square in historic downtown Gettysburg, will present Arthur Miller's The Crucible October 13-29, 2017. The Crucible is a gripping drama about the Salem witch trials. Religion, conspiracy, witchcraft, and lust fill the story as paranoia becomes strong enough to poison a whole town. Miller composed The Crucible as a dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials, with the witch trials standing in for the anti-Communist witch-hunts of the 1950s during the McCarthy era. As with the alleged witches of Salem, suspected Communists were encouraged to confess and identify other Communist sympathizers as means of escaping punishment. Many of those accused of Communism suffered loss of employment and/or destruction of their careers; some even suffered imprisonment. The corruption and deception Miller represented in The Crucible stands as a timely reminder to not always take everything at face value. Smear campaigning, or any type of intentional, premeditated effort to undermine an individual's or group's reputation, credibility, and character, has nearly become synonymous with modern-day politics. Like the accusations of witchcraft, smear campaigns focus on unverifiable rumors that are often distortions, half-truths, or even outright lies disseminated by gossip. Just as it was when written in the 1950's, The Crucible is still a timely parable of our contemporary and political society.

BWW Interview: Chad-Alan Carr, Greg Trax, Michelle Latta, Linden Carbaugh, Max Carlson, Madison Prin of CATS at Gettysburg Community Theatre
by Allison Rambler - Sep 5, 2017

It is a hard to find a child these days who does not have a favorite story. A story that comforts them, that inspires them, fascinates them. A story that used to be read every night before bed and still might rest on the nightstand beside them. Stories provide the fundamentals of childhood, supplying crucial building blocks that influence the way children see the world around them. Each child grows up hearing a tale that sweeps them off their feet and into new ways of thinking and learning, and fosters a creativity that, with any luck, they will carry with them for years to come. It comes as no surprise to anyone that children love to hear stories, but Gettysburg Community Theatre is allowing them the opportunity to jump into the pages themselves with their youth production of CATS JR.

From Broadway to high school auditoriums, members of the theatre community will gather from coast to coast on January 19, 2017 at 5:30 p.m.in each time zone to light a light and make a pledge. Inspired by the theatrical tradition of keeping a "ghost light" on in a darkened theatre, we create light for what for some may be challenging times ahead. The Ghostlight Project is open and welcoming to all, regardless of political affiliation or party. The event is not "a protest" but an act of solidarity and affirmation of values. The focus is not on "rallying against" but on "standing for"-and what the Ghostlight Project stands for are the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion in our theatres and our country.
