Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 the Musical gala performance was held last night, Sunday 17th February. Dolly Parton attended the event, along with celebrity guests including Kylie, Graham Norton and Jason Manford.

Last night, Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 the Musical officially opened at London's Savoy Theatre.

In a programme interview, Patricia Resnick - writer of both the original 1980 film and this 2008 musical adaptation - notes that Jane Fonda wanted to convey a political message about workplace sexism, but realised couching it in comedy would make it more palatable. Like composer Dolly Parton herself, who appears on video to top and tail the stage show, it's a considered combination of sugar and steel.

Dolly Parton presents 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL at the Savoy Theatre, London for a strictly limited season from 28 January - 31 August 2019starring Caroline Sheen as 'Violet Newstead', Amber Davies as 'Judy Bernly', Natalie McQueen as 'Doralee Rhodes', Bonnie Langford as 'Roz Keith' and Brian Conley as 'Franklin Hart'.

Natalie McQueen's past work includes Kinky Boots, Wicked, Les Miserables and Murder Ballad. She's now starring as Doralee - Dolly Parton's role in the film version - in 9 to 5 the Musical, currently playing at the Savoy Theatre.

The show is based on the true story of Canadian teen Marc Hall who sued the Catholic district school board when he wasn't allowed to bring his boyfriend to prom. The show is still a work in progress, but a concert staged production of the full musical was presented with a combined cast of talented West End actors and GSA students.

We recently caught up with Lauren Ward and Nathan Amzi while on a break from rehearsals for Prom Queen, a new musical based on the true story of Canadian teen Marc Hall who took his Catholic school board to court when they wouldn't let him attend prom with his boyfriend. The show will receive a workshop presentation at The Other Palace on 2 July.

Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail has reported that Prom Queen: The Musical, the story of a landmark win for gay rights, will receive a public UK workshop this fall at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Other Palace Theatre.

With A Little Bit of Lerner combined an outstanding group of performers with the BBC Concert Orchestra to present an exciting variety of many of Lerner's well-known and lesser-known songs at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall. It celebrated the centenary of great American lyricist Alan Jay Lerner's birth in 1918.

London Playwrights' Workshop is partnering with musical theatre writing team Barlow & Smith to create the Women's Musical Theatre Initiative (WMTI), a new development programme for female musical theatre writers. The WMTI will launch with a cabaret 'Celebrating Female Songwriters' at The Pheasantry on 12 February 2018. The evening will be hosted by songwriters Barlow & Smith and will bring together a group of accomplished female songwriters to showcase new writing and to raise funds to support the initiative.
