BWW Review: Intense BAD JEWS at The New Jewish Theatre
by Chris Gibson - Dec 5, 2015

Playwright Joshua Harmon has created an intensely dark comedy/drama with his work BAD JEWS. It's a stunning piece that never runs out of steam, even though it maintains a high level of emotional upheaval throughout its 90 minute running time. It's certainly humorous, but it also has a serious tone that leaves audiences with plenty to ruminate on, long after the cast take their bows and the lights come up. That's good theatre in my book. It makes you think, to the point where you may even feel a bit guilty about the laughs it provides. But, that's part of its charm. You may even find yourself moved by an ending that comes about rather unexpectedly. The New Jewish Theatre is currently producing an extremely well cast and directed presentation of this recent (2012) play, and it's one I highly recommend.

BWW Reviews: Mustard Seed Theatre's Moving Revival of ALL IS CALM
by Chris Gibson - Nov 20, 2014

Mustard Seed Theatre has brought back their popular staging of ALL IS CALM - THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914, which premiered around this time last year, and it's definitely a piece of theatre that demands your time and attention. Somehow I must have missed mentioning this the first time around, but this was originally a broadcast that occurred on Minnesota Public Radio. Artistic director/director Deanna Jent took that raw material and molded it into a moving and compelling stage production that won deserved accolades and awards for its excellence. If you didn't catch it last year, then you need to make sure you do so during its current run, and even if you did see it, I can promise you that it's certainly worth seeing again.

BWW Reviews: St Edwards University Puts Modern Spin on TARTUFFE
by Jeff Davis - Feb 23, 2014

It's astounding and a little sad that of all the things that have fallen out of style since the 1600s, hypocrisy isn't one of them. Thankfully though, comedy isn't one of them either. Both hypocrisy and comedy take center stage in St Edwards University's production of Tartuffe, an interesting and often wonderful modern take on Moliere's classic play about a deceitful religious devotee who brings chaos in his wake when he becomes a houseguest to the spiritual but foolish Orgon.

BWW Reviews: BLOOD WEDDING Is Eerily Beautiful But Could Use Stronger Translation
by Jeff Davis - Nov 23, 2013

It's not what you say, it's how you say it. That adage often runs through my head, both in my personal life and in my work as a theater critic. It also runs through my head when viewing productions, especially ones like Blood Wedding. With plays not originally in English, attention must be paid to the translation. Blood Wedding, originally written in Spanish by Frederico Garcia Lorca, offers an additional challenge in Lorca's poetic style. It's not what he says but how he says it that makes Lorca's Blood Wedding an interesting and engaging piece of theatre. While the current production at St. Edwards University manages to visually capture Lorca's poetry, the translation by James Graham Lujan and Richard O'Connell is less successful.

BWW Reviews: Mustard Seed Theatre's Amazing Production of ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914
by Chris Gibson - Nov 14, 2013

ALL IS CALM: THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE OF 1914 is a smartly conceived acapella musical by Peter Rothstein that chronicles the stunning events that occurred on Christmas Day 1914. It mixes short narrative bursts with 23 songs from the period, and it's never dull or contrived. For me, the hearty vocals produced by the cast are a sheer delight to listen to. Mustard Seed Theatre has put together a wonderful production that's a real treat for the upcoming holidays.
