Robby Graham BIO

ROBBY GRAHAM is a Choreographer and Artistic Director of Southpaw Dance Company, creating dance theatre movement that has been called, "...witty, hard”edged, sure in focus, and sizzling in energy" (Clement Crisp, Financial Times). Having created across a diverse number of contexts, from working with disadvantaged young people to movement direction at the National Theatre, Robby tailors the movement to the requirements of his cast to create relevant, thought-provoking, and affective dance theatre that has been described as "fluid movement with an uncanny, gravity-defying poise that is as elegant as ballet" (Eve Stebbing, The Telegraph). To date Robby has presented his award-winning outdoor work across the UK and Europe, notably at Greenwich Docklands International Festival, (Council of the Ordinary, Faust, Carousel) Sadlers Wells, the Royal Albert Hall, the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Australia, New York, and beyond. He has also created several large-scale, mass-movement spectaculars, including Rush, Wordplay and most recently he choreographed The Future of Things Past, the opening ceremony for Castlemaine State Festival in Victoria, Australia. Robby creates work based in a strong physical movement vocabulary, with universal imagery and relatable content, whether working with a professional dance cast, with actors, or with large scale community casts. Robby will return to the National for the Public Arts production, Pericles, in 2018.
