WOMEN BEHIND BARS Opens At 13th Street Repertory Theatre

Joe John Battista, the artistic director of the 13th Street Repertory Theatre, has been dreaming of producing and staging Women Behind Bars, by Tom Eyen, for over 45 years. This week that dream is realized in The 13th Street Repertory Theatre's production of Women Behind Bars, directed by Battista, and produced by Roslyn McKay. For Joe, it's not only a dream come true, but one that comes with the added bonus of casting Amy Stiller, daughter of the famed comedy duo Stiller & Meara, in the role of Gloria.

The black comedy is set in the Women's House of Detention in Greenwich Village circa the 1950s and is a hilarious, sex-crazy ode to B-movies of the 1950's, written by Tom Eye . The campy, but fun story centers around an innocent young woman (Mary-Eleanor) who is framed by her husband on a charge of armed robbery, and is brutalized, betrayed, and sexually assaulted throughout her eight years in prison. She is ultimately broken by the system, on her way to becoming a hard-edged, gum-chomping drug dealer, she is surrounded by a chain-smoking street-wise tough girl, a delicate Southern belle reminiscent of Blanche DuBois, and a sadistic matron and her tough sidekick, to name a few.

The play is currently now playing through April 7th and features a stellar cast that includes Amy Stiller* as Gloria, Kelli Lynn Harrison* as the Matron, Kerielle Sollecito as Mary Eleanor, Marlene Villafane * as Guadalupe, Jena Mroz as Blanche, Erika Degraff as JoJo, Janel Koloski as Cheri, Andy Crosten as Louise, Meridith Nicholaev as Ada, Mary Tierney* as Granny/Warden, and Daniel Yaiullo as Paul, Doctor, Man, and Guard.
