La MaMa Will Honor Lisa Kron at Annual Gala October 25th

La MaMa celebrates its 2018 Regional Theatre Tony Award at its 57th Season Gala on Thursday, October 25 at 6 pm in the Ellen Stewart Theatre (66 E. 4 St.). The Gala evening will honor the Tony Award-winning playwright Lisa Kron (FUN HOME) and will feature performances by downtown icons Taylor Mac and Erin Markey, rising star Gunnar Montana and a musical ensemble of Broadway and Off-Broadway performers singing A Change Will Come by the late La MaMa artist Elizabeth Swados. Mia Yoo is Artistic Director of La MaMa.

In announcing that La MaMa was the recipient of the 2018 Regional Theatre Tony Award last spring, Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing, said: "La MaMa is a staple of the New York theatre scene. It is an exciting space where artists can grow, create, and push boundaries, and we are thrilled to be able to honor them this year."

The impact of La MaMa and its artistic community is exemplified by gala honoree Lisa Kron, who first appeared at La MaMa in Tom Murrin's Alien Comic Revue. She often performed with her theatre troupe the 5 Lesbian Brothers at La MaMa and other downtown venues such as Dixon Place, The WOW Café, and The Kitchen. Lisa is best known for writing the lyrics and book to the musical FUN HOME, for which she won the Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical in 2015. FUN HOME also won the Tony Award for Best Musical, and a 2014 Obie Award.

La MaMa will also honor its long-time law firm, Goldstein Hall PLLC, with A Silver Bell Award in recognition of its invaluable service to La MaMa as well as many other not-for-profit organizations in New York City. With its concentration on affordable housing and community development, Goldstein Hall is deeply rooted in our community and in its success.
