Richmond Triangle Players Announces Its 2018-19 Season

Six plays, covering the depth and breadth of LGTBQ theater, comprise Richmond Triangle Players' 2018-19 Mainstage Season, as the company begins its second quarter-century as one of the area's most acclaimed cultural arts institutions.

"After celebrating our 25th Anniversary this past year," said RTP executive director Philip Crosby, "we now look forward to the future, furthering our mission to change our community's conversation about diversity and inclusion through the production on LGBTQ+ work."

Richmond Triangle Players' 2018-19 continues the three-year programming arc begun last year, focusing on the impact of LGBTQ theater and artists on the art form itself as well as on the local Richmond community. "Our Theater, Our Stories, Our Lives" celebrates some of the most influential works in LGBTQ theater, as well as the artists who have created them, and shines a light on the positive, life-affirming impact of the diversity and inclusion that Richmond Triangle Players embodies in all its productions.

Programming will focus on three distinct areas, as it has in the past:

a "Mainstage Series" of six fully-produced and carefully balanced works, each running four or more weeks; making up the subscription season;

a "Sister Series" of works, staged in simpler, shorter runs;

a "Cabaret Series" presenting artists of local, national and international renown.

Richmond Triangle Players will also play host to some of the Richmond area's other acclaimed companies - including Puppets Off Broad Street and Monument City Music.

RTP's subscription season will begin on Wednesday, August 8, 2018. Subscriptions will go on sale to renewing subscribers June 1, and will be available to the general public on June 15; individual tickets go on sale four weeks prior to each opening night. Prices range from $150-180 for the six-play season.

Richmond Triangle Players influences and affects its communities' conversations about diversity and inclusion through the performance of LGBTQ-themed works. It is the only theater company in the Mid-Atlantic region with that particular focus.

RTP opened its theatre at 1300 Altamont Avenue in historic Scott's addition in early 2010. The Robert B. Moss Theatre is a 4000-square foot performing arts facility accommodating flexible seating arrangements for up to 90 patrons. A graceful lobby, which includes a generous bar, catering capability and box office, adjoins the theater, which features both traditional and cabaret-style seating. The building has fully ADA-compliant access, parking and comfortable restrooms.

"This warm, and welcoming space has enabled us to open our doors to a much wider and diverse audience than ever before," he continued. "People of all ages and lifestyles look at RTP as one of their favorite places to gather with friends - old or new - and see a terrific production."

The theater's final production of its 2018-19 season, the acclaimed musical A Chorus Line, will begin performances on June 6. This landmark musical celebrates those unsung heroes of the American musical theater, the chorus dancers -- those valiant, over-dedicated, underpaid, highly trained performers who back up the star and often make them look even more talented than they are. An unprecedented box office and critical hit, the musical received twelve Tony Award nominations and won nine, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The six 2018-19 subscription season productions will begin with low-priced previews on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 8:00 p.m., with opening on Friday evenings at 8 pm. Subsequent weeks' performances will be on Thursday through Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m., with two Sunday matinees per show at 4:00 p.m. Prices for individual tickets will range from $10 - $40.

The complete Cabaret Series will be announced later this summer.
