THE JEWISH QUEEN LEAR - Theater J

Theater J seeks young actors of all ethnicities to audition for
The Jewish Queen Lear (Jacob Gordin’s Mirele Efros). The crucial role to be filled is that of Shloymele, the 13 year-old grandson of the title character. The young actor will join a multi-cultural and diverse cast consisting of professional actors, including Valerie Leonard (in the title role), Tonya Beckman, Sasha Olinick, Alana D. Sharp, Sue Jin Song, and Frank X, and of students from Georgetown University. The play, a Yiddish theater classic, will have its English language premiere March 13 – April 7 at Georgetown University’s Davis Performing Arts Center. Rehearsals begin February 8, 2019.

Written in 1898, Gordin’s story of power and pride revolves around Mirele Efros, a wealthy widow and savvy business woman who wants to find a good wife for her son. When her children turn against her, Mirele experiences a fall of Shakespearean proportions. Wildly successful in its time, Gordin’s masterpiece will thrill modern audiences in this new translation by Nahma Sandrow and directed by Theater J Artistic Director, Adam Immerwahr.

Theater J is performing Around Town during 2018-2019 while the Edlavitch DCJCC building undergoes a transformative renovation. Georgetown University is the fourth and final stop of the season, after productions at the Kennedy Center, Arena Stage and GALA Hispanic Theatre. The Jewish Queen Lear has been developed in Theater J’s Yiddish Theater Lab and is presented in partnership with the Georgetown University Theater and Performance Studies Program.
