NATIVITY! THE MUSICAL - The Birmingham Repertory Theatre

Sparkle & Shine: Nativity! The Musical seeks Coventry kids for star turn in UK tour

Following its successful opening at The Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 2017, Nativity! The Musical heads home to the city where the story started this autumn, kicking off a brand new tour for 2018 at the Belgrade Theatre.

Ahead of its arrival in Coventry 23-28 October, the company is now on the look-out for local children to audition for the show. Bright young stars from the Midlands are being offered the chance to sparkle and shine in lead roles as the children of St. Bernadette’s.

Auditions will be held the week commencing 28 May (half-term week), with rehearsals taking place in Coventry from Monday 17 September until Monday 22 October. Performances will then begin in Coventry on the 23 October, followed by a UK tour ending in London on 31 December. So if you think you know a star-in-the-making who has got what it takes, be sure to keep your diary free for those dates!

All kids auditioning must be confident singers, dancers and performers due to the demands of the role, and they must also be:

  • Living in the Midlands area

  • Aged between 9-11 by 1 September 2018

  • Approximately no taller than 135cm

  • Able to play a character of around 6-10 years old

  • Naturally confident, outgoing and keen performers

  • Available for all of the rehearsal and performance dates across the whole tour (full tour dates listed below

To apply for the part, you’ll need to do the following:

  • Upload a 1 minute YouTube clip (please make your YouTube links private) of your child showcasing his/her talents. That can be singing, dancing, rapping or breakdancing - whatever you think best shows their performing talent and personality.

  • Don't forget to get your child to introduce themselves, and tell us their name, age and where they are from at the start of video.

  • When you've uploaded the clip, complete our online application form and include a link to the video here

The closing date for applications is Friday 27 April. Successful applicants will be contacted directly with details of where and when auditions are taking place.

Based on the hugely popular festive film series, Nativity! The Musical is the smash-hit stage adaptation of the original Nativity! movie, famously filmed on location here in Coventry. The show is written and directed by the multi-talented Debbie Isitt, creator of the film series.

Every child in every school has one Christmas wish, to star in a Nativity, and at St Bernadette’s School they’re attempting to mount a musical version! Only trouble is teacher Mr Maddens has promised that a Hollywood producer is coming to see the show to turn it into a film. Join him, his crazy teaching assistant Mr Poppy, some hilarious children and a whole lot of sparkle and shine as they struggle to make everyone’s Christmas wish come true.

Feel-good, funny and full of yuletide joy, Nativity! The Musical features all of the favourite sing-a-long hits from the films including Sparkle and Shine, Nazareth, One Night One Moment, She’s the Brightest Star – plus a whole host of new songs filled with the spirit of Christmas!

Nativity! The Musical runs at the Belgrade Theatre from Tuesday 23 until Saturday 28 October, before embarking on a UK tour. Tickets are available to book now by calling the box office on 024 7655 3055, or by visiting

NOTES TO EDITORS:

  • The Belgrade Theatre Trust is a registered charity (number 219163). This means that all the money given, raised or earned is not distributed as profit but kept and reinvested in the work that we do. We are reliant on the valued support of our donors and sponsors to ensure that we can continue to develop our artistic and educational work and remain central to the communities that we serve.

  • The Belgrade Theatre is supported by Arts Council England who champion, develop and invest in artistic and cultural experiences that enrich people’s lives. Between 2015 and 2018, they plan to invest £1.1 billion of public money from government and an estimated £700 million from the National Lottery to help create these experiences for as many people as possible across the country.

  • The Belgrade Theatre is part of a network of organisations promoting engagement with arts and culture in the lead-up to Coventry’s City of Culture year in 2021. In December 2017, supporters of the Coventry bid gathered at the Belgrade Theatre in the heart of the city to watch the announcement live from Hull, with press on hand to broadcast their reactions to the country. Over the next few years, we will be working closely with both the City of Culture Trust and with communities across the region to present an exciting programme of shows and events reflecting the diversity and passion that made Coventry’s bid a success.

  • In March 2018, the Belgrade Theatre marks 60 years since its opening in 1958. To celebrate, an exciting programme of shows and events has been planned for the year ahead, developed in close partnership with our local communities and partners, including a performance takeover of the nearby Coventry Evening Telegraph building in July, followed by home-produced shows and an anniversary gala this autumn.
