CALL TO AUDITION

April 30th - May 1st, 2018

7pm

Dance like you've never danced before! Flashdance the Musical tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of 18 year old Alex, a welder by day and 'flashdancer' by night, who dreams of going to the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy and becoming a professional dancer. When a romance complicates her ambitions, she harnesses it to drive her dream.

Based on the Paramount Pictures film (Screenplay by Tom Hedley and Joe Eszterhas, story by Tom Hedley) Flashdance is an inspiring musical about the power of holding onto your dreams and love against all the odds.

Prepare to be blown away with an astonishing musical spectacle and phenomenal choreography to this iconic score including the smash hit Maniac, Manhunt, Gloria, I Love Rock & Roll and the sensational title track Flashdance...What a Feeling.

Auditions will consist of:

Vocal/Music: Please prepare 16 bars of an upbeat tempo song. An accompanist will be provided. Sheet music will not be provided. If you bring sheet music please sing in the key that's written. Mobile devices or CD's may also be used for auditions. A speaker will be provided.

Choreography: You will learn a simple dance combination (Wear comfortable clothes/shoes, bring jazz shoes if you have them).Readings: cold readings from the script

Roles:

ALEX OWENS - 19, steel worker by day, flash dancer by night. Alex is a strong willed young woman who is also witty, energetic, loyal and loveable. She is ambitious and a little rebellious but sensible and possibly even cautious and sometimes mistrusting of people in power. Mid range voice - lowest note is G, below middle C. Needs to be able to sing a separate melody when singing with a full chorus. Strong dancer - has solo dances. Involved in lots of the numbers - sings GLORIA with the girls and a duet with Hannah called ONE IN A MILLION; She also duets with Nick in a number called DON'T STOP.

KEISHA - Dancer at the Steel Bar - strong character. One of the team of four dancers who are full of attitude, back-chat and banter. Alto voice - needs to be able to harmonise. Sings bottom line when singing Some of the numbers she sings are MANIAC, I LOVE ROCK 'N' ROLL, GLORIA and FLASHDANCE.

JAZMIN - Dancer at the Steel Bar - flirtatious character. One of the team of four dancers who are full of attitude, back-chat and banter. Alto/Mezzo - needs to be able to harmonise. Sings middle line when singing with Keisha and Gloria. Strong dancer - has solo dances. Some of the numbers she sings are MANIAC, I LOVE ROCK 'N' ROLL, GLORIA and FLASHDANCE.

GLORIA - Dancer at the Steel Bar - daring character. One of the team of four dancers who are full of attitude, back-chat and banter. Gloria gets herself more involved with other elements of the plot, puts herself in danger and shows her vulnerable side. Mezzo/Soprano - needs to be able to harmonise. Sings top line when singing with Keisha and Jazmin. Strong dancer - has solo dances. Some of the numbers she sings are MANIAC, I LOVE ROCK 'N' ROLL, GLORIA and FLASHDANCE.

HANNAH OWENS - Alex's mom. Looks older than her 40 years. Worn out by life but ambitious for Alex. Tries to be fun and chirpy for her daughter's sake for whom she is a friend as well as a loving mum. Alto - needs to be able to harmonise. Has a couple of duets with Alex called ONE IN A MILLION and YOU'RE NOT DONE.

NICK HURLEY - Late 20's, nephew of the owner of Hurley Steel. Nick is the lead male in the show and pursues Alex romantically. He is his 'own man' and well meaning - always wanting to do the best for his business and those who work for him (who he gets on well with). He is always charming and confident and playful when flirting with Alex. Tenor - needs to be able to sing a top F and top G. Has a solo called WAKE UP and duets with Alex in DON'T STOP.

JIMMY KAMINSKY - Early 20's. Always talking of making it big as a stand-up comedian but a loser who hangs about on the streets living on his wits and nervous energy, blagging, sofa surfing, stealing. Upbeat and friendly to Alex but ultimately unreliable. Tenor - needs to be able to sing top E and top F. Has a duet with Alex called TWENTY ONE, as well as a number called YOU CAN'T KEEP ME DOWN with the Ensemble, and some lines in a song called EXPERIENCE.

HARRY GREEN - Owner of the Steel Bar, middle aged. Bossy but kind and protective to the girls who dance at his club. Tough but a bit of an old-fashioned showman/compère at heart. No solos but ensemble singing.

DR KOOL - Owner of the Skin Deep club - sleezy character who can 'snap' at any moment. Sharp and manipulative business man with the 'gift of the gab'. Happy to exploit girls with promises of fame and fortune. Strong tenor singer - needs to be able to hold their own, singing a different line when singing with a full chorus. Needs to be able to sing a top D. Sings solo lines in EXPERIENCE.

JOE - Steel Mill worker, 50's, foreman. Gets on well with Nick his boss and offers a wise word here and there. Tenor - needs to be able to harmonise. Sings Steeltown with Alex and the Ensemble.

SAMMY - Steel Mill worker, 30's, family man. Tenor - needs to be able to harmonise; sings top F. Sings Steeltown with Alex and the Ensemble. ABE - Steel Mill worker, 20's. Tenor - needs to be able to harmonise. Sings Steeltown with Alex and the Ensemble.

C.C. LA DRUE - Dr Kool's business partner - can be male or female - can double up and be part of Ensemble when not in character. Doesn't say a lot but helps portray the dubious character of Dr Kool's club with his/her flamboyant but seedy style. Strong tenor singer - needs to be able to hold their own, singing a different line when singing with a full chorus. Needs to be able to sing a top D. Sings solo lines in EXPERIENCE

GIRL LEAD SUPPORT ROLES - opportunity to support the main 4 girls as Steel Bar dancers and singers. Strong singers able to harmonise and/or strong dancers.

ENSEMBLE - Steel mill workers, street dancers, Shipley Academy students, customers at the clubs, dancers at the clubs. Will be looking for a mix of bass, tenor, alto, mezzo and soprano voices. Plus dancers. Ensemble characters are involved in loads of the great numbers!

All works selected and presented in the series make perfect use of the Playhouse's 53 seat Stonzek Studio Theater, an intimate setting which provides the audience with a personal and visceral theatre going experience. The focus of the series is on the story, writing and acting of a chosen work with very basic technical arrangements.
