Tennessee Williams Theatre Company's SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER to Debut at the 2019 TW Festival

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans will be producing Suddenly Last Summer, Williams' suspenseful 1958 psychodrama in spring this year. The play will be mounted at Loyola University New Orleans and will be a collaboration with the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival.

The action of the drama takes place in the opulent garden district mansion of a deceased poet, Sebastian Venable. While Venable himself never appears in the scenes, he lives on through the stories told by his mother Violet-and the mysterious account of his death told by his cousin, Catharine Holly. When Catharine's story does not fall in line with Violet's, the matron sets about silencing the girl before the story spreads outside the garden walls. She summons a doctor to their meeting who has begun research into a new procedure-the lobotomy. The audience will feel like a jury in the trial of Catharine Holly as they are situated among the gargantuan, carnivorous plants of Sebastians' garden!

The all-local cast includes award-winning actress Gwendolyne Foxworth as Violet Venable, Elizabeth McCoy as Catharine Holly (McCoy won acclaim last year for her turn as Stella in Le Petit Theatre's A Streetcar Named Desire), Matthew Raetz as Dr. Sugar, Ann Dalrymple as Sister Felicity, Bianca Siplin as Ms. Foxhill, Lin Gathright as Mrs. Holly, and Jay Canova as George Holly. The setting will be rendered by award-winning designer Kenneth Thompson (the NOLA Project's Spider Queen puppet designer, among other immersive works). TWTC Co-Artistic Director Augustin J Correro directs the production.
