Northrop Presents Ballet Preljocaj, March 30

World-renowned French dance company Ballet Preljocaj brings a fascinating exploration of the supernatural power of art to Northrop Sat, Mar 30, with La Fresque (The Painting on the Wall). Choreographed by "one of France's foremost contemporary dance choreographers" Angelin Preljocaj, the piece plunges audiences into the rich symbolism and metaphor of a traditional Chinese tale telling the story of travelers mesmerized by a magnificent fresco.

Ballet Preljocaj's La Fresque (The Painting on the Wall) navigates the space between representation and reality as it loosely interprets a Chinese folk tale of travelers mesmerized by a painting that comes to life and a journey into another dimension. The work features captivating choreography enhanced by evocative sets, videos, and an electro-fusion musical score by French musician and composer Nicolas Godin.

Angelin Preljocaj, who founded Ballet Preljocaj in 1984, is known for his "intensely physical, formally complex pieces that often invoke narrative without making it explicit" (The New York Times). He shot to fame in 1990 with his dystopian interpretation on Romeo and Juliet, and has since created 52 choreographic works, ranging from solo pieces to larger formations including dances for the Paris Opera Ballet, Berlin Ballet and New York City Ballet. Preljocaj regularly collaborates with artists in various fields such as music, literature, fashion, visual arts, and design, and has made several films including the feature-length drama Polina, released in 2016.

Based in Aix-en-Provence, France, Ballet Preljocaj is composed of 24 permanent dancers and presents more than 100 performances a year in France and abroad. Northrop audiences last saw the company perform Snow White (Blanche Neige) in April 2012 as well as And then, one thousand years of peace in Oct 2013.
