Northrop Announces Film Series Including Oscar-Winning Movies to Complement Dance Performances Northrop announces its 2018-19 Film Series, featuring several Oscar-winning films and diverse artistic voices from around the world.

These nine award-winning films complement astounding dance companies in Northrop's 2018-19 Dance Season and provide deeper insight and context into the dance performances. Free screenings are scheduled in conjunction with the dance performances , and each film shares thematic DNA (Hecho en Mexico) with its corresponding dance company, if not direct artistic parentage (Ceux Qui Dansent Sur La Tête, Polina, Bittersweet & Two Seconds After Laughter) with what audiences will see live in Northrop's Dance Season. Screenings start at 6:30 pm in Northrop's Best Buy Theater on the fourth floor.

Hecho en Mèxico

In conjunction with Ballet Hispanico's Latina Choreographers Program
FREE and open to the public

Mexican actors, artist, poets, and musicians including Diego Luna, Kinky, Lila Down, Los Tucanes de Tijuana and local street and folk artist from all walks of life star in this documentary that showcases the diversity of contemporary Mexican cultures and their complicated relationship with the United States. Michelle Manzanales, choreographer of Con Brazos Abiertos, which will be featured in Ballet Hispanico's repertory program, has said this movie resonated with her as a "third-culture kid." In Spanish with English subtitles.

Ceux Qui Dansent Sur La Tête (Those Who Dance on the Head)

Made for French television, this film follows two young, passionate hip-hop artists who move from the countryside to the city to fulfill their ambitions of auditioning for a role in a famous choreographer's next project. Portions of this movie were filmed on location in the studio of Compagine Käfig and feature the company's dancers. Käfig's Artistic Director, Mourad Merzouki, provided choreographic consultation for the film and the finale features Merzouki's piece Boxing Boxing. In French without English subtitles.

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco

This 1935 film version of Tolstoy's tragic tale of passion, revenge and social status in 19th-century Imperial Russia stars Greta Garbo as Anna, Fredric Marsh as Count Vronksy and a pre-Sherlock Holmes' Basil Rathbone as Karenin. Dripping with the opulence of MGM's golden age, legendary producer David O. Selznick spared no expense. This version was considered a "neat and faithful" adaptation by critics of the day. More than 80 years later, it has achieved cult classic status as a master class in scenery chewing courtesy of Garbo and Rathbone.

Director Barry Jenkins' profoundly moving portrayal of the moments, people, and unknowable forces that shape their lives not only earned the film awards and accolades but also inspired a moving dance tribute created by Robert Battle, artistic director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, who also grew up in that same Florida neighborhood.

Based on the French graphic novel of the same name and co-directed by Angelin Preljocaj, this film follows the fictional journey of a young ballerina training to join the Bolshoi Ballet until her discovery of contemporary dance takes her down a different path. Staring Anastasia Shevtsova, who studied at the renowned Vaganova Academy and danced for the Mariinisky Ballet, it also features Oscar-winning actress Juliet Binoche who has collaborated with Akram Kahn. In French with English subtitles.
