The 5 & Dime Presents HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE The 5 & Dime today announced its next mainstage production: How I Learned to Drive, which will run August 10 through August 26. Tickets are now on sale at the5anddime.org.

Paula Vogel presents the story of a woman who learns the rules of the road and life from behind the wheel. How I Learned to Drive is a wildly funny, surprising and devastating tale of survival, a sexual coming of age through the 60's, 70's and 80's as seen through the provocative lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl and an older man. Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, How I Learned to Drive is one of Paula Vogel's strongest works.

"We are proud to present the Northeast Florida premiere of this critically acclaimed play," said Lee Hamby, Managing Director of The 5 & Dime. "It made a huge impact when it was first written, and we are looking forward to bringing it to The 5 & Dime for our local audience to experience the show."

Daniel Austin, director of How I Learned to Drive, has assembled a cast of local actors for this production, including Katie Swider McCloskey as L'il Bit; Brian Niece as Uncle Peck and Danielle Dobies, Daniel Wiebusch and Chelsea Black as the Greek Chorus.

"I wanted to direct this project because as a creator, I'm drawn to very powerfully told stories," said Austin. "I've always admired the way that Paula Vogel treats this subject with such humor, raw emotion, and frank humanity. In this particular moment in time where we're experiencing a 'Me Too' movement and having open and honest conversations about sexual abuse across many levels, I think it is an important moment to revisit this play."
