Wexford Festival Opera Will Be Available For Streaming

Each year thousands of visitors from Ireland and around the world travel to Wexford to discover hidden operatic gems. This year audiences around the world will have the chance to experience the magic of Wexford Festival Opera for themselves without ever leaving their homes.

As part of Wexford's long-running partnership with RTÉ, for the first time ever, the national broadcaster will live-stream one of the Festival's main stage evening operas. The Bank Holiday Saturday performance of Saverio Mercadante's Il bravo (The Assassin) will be streamed live from the National Opera House via www.rte.ie/culture on 27 October. It will also be shared with ARTE, the European public service broadcaster, to be streamed on its new dedicated opera platform, ARTE Opera, as part of its remit to broaden the accessibility of international audiences to free-to-view online opera performances. The performance will also be available on both platforms for a time-limited catch-up period.

This non-commercial venture, with the streamed performance made available free-to-view to all, falls under RTÉ's public service remit, and augments Wexford's education and access policy of reaching larger audiences to showcase the work of Wexford Festival Opera and enabling live interactions with new audiences watching remotely.

The local community in Wexford are invited to experience in a large communal atmosphere this multi-camera live stream of Il bravo in a free non-ticketed public screening that evening at 8pm in Clayton Whites Hotel, introduced by RTÉ lyric fm presenter Liz Nolan. Numbers for this 250 seat event are limited and will be provided on a first come first served basis, so audiences are encouraged to arrive early, from 7pm.

Simultaneously, RTÉ lyric fm will also broadcast the opera live nationally that evening as part of Opera Night with Paul Herriott. This broadcast will be shared internationally, courtesy of the European Broadcast Union (EBU) Premium Opera Season, in ten countries including Ireland, Croatia, Germany, Canada, Russia, Bulgaria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain, reaching an expected 15 million listeners world-wide.

This is the ninth year of the partnership with Wexford Festival Opera and the EBU, which has brought Wexford to millions of listeners throughout the world.

Commenting on the free, public live-streaming in Clayton Whites Hotel, Chief Executive David McLoughlin said, "Ten years after RTÉ broadcast live to the nation from the National Opera House, this year it will live stream Wexford to the world. And the local Wexford community can avail of the unique opportunity to experience and enjoy together as a group this further ground-breaking step in Wexford's evolution of a live web broadcast of a Wexford opera production for the first time ever"

The other two main stage operas will be recorded for future radio broadcast. The European premiere of Dinner at Eight, composed by William Bolcom with libretto by Mark Campbell, will be broadcast on 3 November via RTÉ lyric fm, and by several EBU member stations. The double-bill of L'oracolo by Franco Leoni and Mala vita by Umberto Giordano will be broadcast on RTÉ lyric fm on 10 November.
