DUBLIN WILL SHOW YOU HOW By Tracy Martin Comes to Abbey Theatre

Dublin Will Show You How is a provocative new play that offers a glimpse into the lives of women in north inner city Dublin. Written by Tracy Martin and directed by Vanessa Fielding, the play explores the coercion and crime, intimidation and isolation that these women experience in their daily lives.

Based on a concept by Vanessa Fielding, who is also Artistic Director of The Complex, the play is inspired by the women of north inner city Dublin who shared their stories as part of the Browbeating Project, a community collaboration between the Abbey Theatre and The Complex.

Over an eighteen-month period, Vanessa Fielding devised and led workshops with over one hundred local women from north inner city Dublin, and these informed the basis of Tracy Martin's script.

"The telly stays on all the time now. The noise drowns out the quiet as well as the sound of drunks all shouting the odds. When Brendan was a kid you'd hear him shouting to his mates from miles away. Little deep fog horn voice. I was never able to set him to shut up. Sky News I called him cos he used to love telling me everything. We were best pals. But then he stopped telling me things and the secrets came."

Returning to the Abbey Theatre are cast-members Liz Fitzgibbon, Luke Griffin and David O'Meara. Joining them are four actors making their Abbey Theatre debut, Thommas Kane Byrne, Denise McCormack, Lacy Moore and Leah Moore.

Vanessa Fielding, Director of The Complex and Director/Producer of Dublin Will Show You How: 'We are honoured to be working with the Abbey. The process has been collaborative from the outset and rewarding in its solidarity. The extensive number of workshops informed the play's investigations with revealing and sometimes shocking contributions from over one hundred women. Tracy Martin then converted their essence into a rare and poetic piece of writing. It is hoped that this will end any endemic tolerance for bullying and coercion, a microcosm of society as reflected in our play.'

Jen Coppinger, Head of Producing (New Work) at the Abbey Theatre: 'Inspired by the real-life stories of over one hundred women, Tracy Martin has written a play for our times, a play for Dublin and its people. While the Abbey is Ireland's National Theatre, it is important for us to engage with our neighbours here in our immediate community of north inner city Dublin. This play is borne of the Browbeating Project, a collaboration between the Abbey in Dublin 1 and The Complex in Dublin 7. We are honoured to share these urgent stories.'

Dublin Will Show You How opens at the Abbey Theatre on Thursday 4 April before transferring to The Complex, Arran Street East, Dublin 7 where it runs from Tuesday 9 April to Saturday 13 April.
