Daniele Rustioni Makes American Orchestral Conducting Debut With the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra

Daniele Rustioni, 35, Principal Conductor of the Opéra National de Lyon, will make his American orchestral conducting debut with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, January 31-February 2, 2019. Rustioni will lead the orchestra in performances of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3, Respighi's Fontane di Roma, and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 with soloist Julian Steckel. Later in the season, Rustioni will conduct a new production of Tchaikovsky's rarely-performed The Enchantress for Opéra National de Lyon, make his debut at the Teatro Real Madrid with Verdi's Falstaff, lead the Orchestra della Toscana in a three-city tour of Italy, and return to conduct the Staatsorchester Stuttgart.

Rustioni makes his long-awaited American orchestral debut conducting a diverse program of 20th-century masterworks with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, January 31-February 2, 2019. On January 31, Rustioni leads a matinee concert featuring Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3. On February 1 and 2, Rustioni will reprise the Rachmaninoff alongside Respighi's Fontane di Roma, and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 with soloist Julian Steckel. Rustioni's American orchestral conducting debut comes two seasons after his critically acclaimed debut at the Metropolitan Opera conducting Verdi's Aida. Rustioni made his American debut conducting Cherubini's Medea for The Glimmerglass Festival in Summer 2011; he has also conducted Bellini's Norma at Washington National Opera.

Rustioni opened his second season as Principal Conductor of Opéra National de Lyon in October 2018 with a new production of Boïto's verismo rarity Mefistofele directed by Alex Ollé, Artistic Director of La Fura dels Baus, followed by a concert performance of Verdi's Nabucco starring Leo Nucci in the title role in November 2018. Rustioni conducts a new production of Tchaikovsky's The Enchantress at Opéra National de Lyon, March 15-31. The production will be directed by Andriy Kholdak.

This Spring, Rustioni makes his debut with the Teatro Real Madrid conducting a new production of Verdi's Falstaff by Laurent Pelly. The production stars Nicola Alaimo and Roberto de Candia alternating in the role of Falstaff, with Rebecca Evans and Raquel Lojendio as Alice Ford, Daniela Barcellona and Marianna Pizzolato as Dame Quickly, Ruth Iniesta and Rocío Pérez as Nannetta, and Joel Prieto and Albert Casals as Fenton. The premiere of the new production will take place on April 23, with Rustioni conducting all 11 performances through May 8.

Principal Conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana since 2011, Rustioni leads the orchestra on a three-city tour of Italy this May, with concerts in Firenze, Siena, and Bologna. Rustioni closes his 2018-2019 season with a return to Staatsorchester Stuttgart on May 26 and 27, 2019 conducting a program of Ligeti, Grieg, and Sibelius.
