PREPARATION

For Plays: Please prepare 2 contrasting 1- minute monologues. For Musicals: Please prepare two 32-bar cuts of songs in the style of the musical. To audition for both, please prepare one 32-bar cut and one monologue. NOTE: The accompanist will only be available on Fri, 4/5, but you may sing acappella 4/1 & 4/4. SEEKING: (Offers are out for all principal roles - Seeking Understudies)

Natasha - Soprano, G3-F5. Young and naive; she loves Andrey with all her heart. Innocent but not unintelligent. Expert vocalist. This role includes minimal intimacy.

Pierre - Bari-Tenor, Ab2-Ab4. Bewildered, awkward, and in a depressive state of ennui. May be asked to play accordion. Expert vocalist.

Andrey - Baritone, F2-Eb3. Andrey is engaged to Natasha, and away from Moscow.

Sonya - Mezzo-Soprano, B3-C5. Good, youthful. Wise and much cooler than everyone else but doesn’t act like it. Natasha's cousin and closest friend.

Marya - Alto, G3-B4. Oldschool; a grande dame of Moscow. Natasha's Godmother, strict yet kind. Hélène - Alto, G3-F5. A “slut”; Anatole's sister, married to Pierre. Not kind or glamorous.

Anatole - Tenor, B2-C#5. Hot; he spends his money on women and wine. An absolute rake. Expert vocalist. This role includes minimal intimacy.

Dolokhov - Baritone, E3-F4. fierce (but not too important). Anatole's friend, a crazy good shot. Comedic and charming, a good time guy.

Mary - Mezzo-Soprano, G3-B4. Plain, Andrey’s sister. Kept under Bolkonsky’s thumb. Would be more interesting if anyone allowed her to be.

Balaga - Baritone, A2-E4. Fun and vibrant troika driver. Loves to drink and party. Comedic and outgoing.

Prince Bolkonsky - male identifying, will internally cover and play smaller roles in addition to Old Prince Bolkonsky, Andrey and Mary’s crazy father. Baritone/Baritenor.

Ensemble 1 - any gender, dance captain. Strong mover, high or low voice.

Ensemble 2 - female identifying, will internally cover. Soprano/Mezzo, strong vocalist.

SEEKING:

Narrator - 35-55, any identity. A natural storyteller. Curious, sincere, has the ability to navigate easily between humor and grief, lightness and seriousness. At ease with improvisation and audience interaction. Has a sharp sense of emotional intelligence and be able to read the room. While this is a solo show, the actor playing the narrator uses the audience members to play the other characters they encounter.

SEEKING:

Manus - late 20s/early 30s, male, Irish. A physically slight person with a limp since childhood. The teacher at his father’s hedge school. Leads with his intellect, but is kind with a deep emotional capacity and hope.

Owen - 20s, male, Irish, Manus’ brother. A confident extrovert and diplomat who has moved beyond his small beginnings.

Hugh - early 60s, male, father of Manus and Owen, Irish. Master of the hedge school; the quintessential impoverished scholar. Proud and authoritative, but unable to grow past his own flaws and insecurities.

Jimmy Jack - 60s, male, Irish. The oldest student of the hedge school and a true eccentric - deeply lonely but loves books and language more than people. A contemporary of Hugh.

Sarah - 17-35, female, Irish. A dedicated student of the hedge school and mostly non-verbal. Has an openness to the world but a crippling shyness that makes her incredibly observant but unable to participate.

Maire - 20s, female, Irish. One of the hedge school students; the one that wants out - she’s fiery, opinionated, strong, and confident. A practical romantic who understands her circumstances but fights for more. This role includes minimal intimacy.

Doalty - 20s, male, Irish. One of the hedge school students, smarter than he looks or acts. Not interested in what’s being taught but in what he can learn in the world. Will fight for what he believes.

Bridget - 20s, female, Irish. One of the hedge school students, the town gossip. Plucky; Wants action for the sake of action.

Captain Lancey - 50s-60s, British soldier and the cartographer for the Ordnance Survey. Better with maps than people, he embodies the entitled imperialist, far removed from everyone in the play.

Captain George Yolland - late 20s/early 30s, male, British soldier and translator for the Ordnance Survey. Shy and awkward, he falls in love with the Irish town and its inhabitants. This role includes minimal intimacy.

Rita Madhwani- Female. 25. South Asian. Neraj’s daughter and Sindhu’s sister. Sous chef of Dhaba Canteen. Born and raised in Chicago. This role includes intimacy.

Sindhu Madhwani - Female. 30. South Asian. Neraj’s daughter and Rita’s sister. A consultant at a firm like McKinsey. Born and raised in Chicago.

Luz Fuentes - Female. Mid 20s. Caribbean/Afro-Latine. Line chef at Dhaba Canteen. Moved to the states from the Dominican Republic when she was 8. This role includes intimacy.
