Please prepare EITHER one brief monologue and 32 bars of a song OR two brief contrasting monologues. If singing, bring sheet music.

WOMEN

PAMELA – 11. A charming, precocious and very unhappy young girl whose mother has died. Pamela has a wildly inventive imagination but everyone around her sees her more as a “weirdo.” The musical takes place on the day of her 11th birthday, when her eccentric and fabulous Aunt Louise takes Pamela to her first Broadway musical. Over the course of her adventure in New York, she discovers her tribe and the place where, as she says “all the pieces fit”—the world of musical theater.

AUNT LOUISE - 40s-60s. Pamela’s eccentric and fabulous aunt, who sweeps Pamela away on her 11th birthday to see her very first Broadway musical and meet many of the colorful personalities of the New York theater world. Aunt Louise is a famous designer of blue jeans and always fabulously dressed.

LYNDELL/BETTY SONGHEIM/COUNTESS - Late 30s. Lyndell is the girlfriend of Pamela’s father, and the divorced mother of Jessica. She’s a personal trainer and very attractive. Her idea of a birthday treat is a special cholesterol and dairy free egg-white frittata. Lyndell knows Pamela is on to her and therefore always tries to be really nice to her. / Betty Songheim is the co-author of the musical-within-a-musical; she writes the book and the lyrics. / The Countess is a character in the musical-within-a-musical; she should make you think of the Countess in The Sound of Music.

JESSICA/HEIDI LEE LEE/ENSEMBLE – 20s, must be able to play 16. Jessica is one of the popular girls, but she always tries to appreciate the kids in her class who are having a little trouble—the ones who are gifted but isolated. She’s a straight-A student and misses having a dad. / Heidi Lee Lee is a set designer.

MARY ETHEL BERNADETTE – late 30s/early 40s. A musical theater star and the leading lady of the musical-within-a-musical. She’s attractive and has charisma. In the musical-within-a-musical, she plays a governess in Salzburg named Maria. Think of The Sound of Music.

TINY LATUNA/MESSENGER/GLADYS/ENSEMBLE - 20s-70s. Tiny La Tuna is a choreographer. / The Messenger is a performer in the musical-within-a-musical. / Gladys is an usher. She’s kind.

MEN

KEVIN/NATHAN HINES KLINE – 40s-50s. Kevin is Pamela’s father. Though well-meaning, he doesn’t fully understand his creative, unusual daughter. / Nathan Hines Kline is the leading man of the musical-within-a-musical that Pamela sees on her 11th birthday.

DANIEL/JULES GELS/LINZER TORTE/ENSEMBLE – 20s, must be able to play the energy of a child. Daniel is six years old and looks like a mad scientist. / Jules Gels is a lighting designer / Linzer Torte is a character in the musical-within-a-musical; he should make you think of one of the children in The Sound of Music.

THOMAS/CY SONGHEIM/FRIEDRICH/ENSEMBLE – 20s, must be able to play a teenager. Thomas is around 15 years old and extremely athletic looking. / Cy Songheim is the co-author of the musical-within-a-musical; he composes the music. / Friedrich is a character in the musical-within-a-musical; he should make you think of one of the children in The Sound of Music.

BERNIE S. GERRY – 40s – 60s. A big-time Broadway producer and theater owner. He is only willing to take criticism from God, and even then, only in small, little doses.

HAL HITNER – 40s – 60s. A big-time Broadway director. He’s good at shouting and bossing people around. He’s the director of the musical-within-a-musical.

ROBERT/HARRISON ROY/ENSEMBLE – 30s. Robert is the fabulous assistant to Aunt Louise. He’s very trendy and dresses in black. He’s a genius at invention, and he has used his imagination to make himself happy in his life and his work. / Harrison is the stage manager of the musical-within-a-musical.

NICK/BILLY IVEY ZIPPERS/BUTLER/ENSEMBLE – 20s. Nick is a doorman / Billy Ivey Zippers is a costume designer. / The Butler is a performer in the musical-within-a-musical

MARGARET FLYNN – CAST

ELIZABETH FLYNN: Late 30’s. Caucasian. A single mom who is devoted to her child, Maddy, and struggling to understand her. She can barely suppress her anger at those who have abandoned her (especially her beloved, long-absent father). She has always struggled to be seen. She’s in a 12-step program and believes that forgiveness comes from Jesus.

MADDY FLYNN - 16. Any ethnicity. Maddy is called Matthew early in the play. Maddy is a beautiful, androgynous being. Maddy has known that they were born into the wrong body since kindergarten. Now, Maddy is searching for the means to become whole. Note: transfeminine actors are encouraged to audition for this role.

MEN

THEODORE FLYNN - Mid-30’s. Caucasian. Called Theo; his mother and sister sometimes call him Teddy. Buddhist. An unpublished poet, an exile, a bicycle repairman. He has returned to his childhood home to take care of his dying mother. He is haunted by the past—a sexual encounter with a priest when he was 16 and, most of all, his refusal to testify against that priest on behalf of another boy. There is something between him and Abe.

ABE CRAMER - Mid-30s. African. A boyhood immigrant from Chad, Africa, he grew up in Atlanta before moving with his adoptive parents to the Catskills. He can be silent, solemn; as a child in Africa, he suffered a trauma. He went to high school with Theo; there was—and still is—something between them. He is a hospice nurse who loves his work.

WOMEN

GIN DEL SOL – 20s. African-American. Driven, stubborn, quick-thinking and a gifted musician, Gin will do anything to follow her music and achieve her dream of playing in a band, including creating an entirely new identity for herself. Her ambition occasionally makes her cruel, though she talks tougher than she is, and she has yet to learn the cost of her own sacrifices. Must have a beautiful, jazzy singing voice.

EVELYN WATERS – 50s. African-American. The lead singer of her own all-women’s band in 1946, Evelyn has had to fight tooth and nail for her spot in a man’s world, and she’s as tough as you’d need to be to achieve that. Despite her quick temper, lack of patience, and fearsome demeanor, she maintains a soft spot for her man Leroi, fighting across the sea. Must have a beautiful, jazzy singing voice.

LULU – 30s-40s. African-American. The drummer of the band, Lulu has been around the block. Almost always high or drunk, she’s a bit of a mess and can be downright mean if she wants to be, but she’s also a lot of fun, and very funny. She’s not as tough as she pretends to be. Must have an earthy, jazzy singing voice.

RUBY – 30s-40s. African-American. The band’s bassist and unofficial den mother, Ruby is a peacemaker who always has pots of delicious soul food cooking as soon as she can get to a kitchen. However, despite her warmth, Ruby is no pushover and has made great sacrifices to be where she is. Must have a beautiful, jazzy singing voice.

LUNA C – 20s-40s. African-American. A little bit Billie Holiday, a little bit Bette Davis, and a little bit magical, Luna C is Mother Time, the spirit of the music, and the voice of Gin Del Sol’s journey. A silver-voiced narrator who’s as elegant as she is wise, she knows the past and the future and will occasionally decide to share what she knows. Must have a beautiful, smooth singing voice, and the ability to mimic the sound of the jazz greats.

MEN

SHORTY – 40s-50s. African-American. The band’s long-suffering manager and the most common target of Evelyn’s wrath, Shorty carries a secret torch for her and makes sure her many demands are taken care of with a smile. Warm and kind, if perhaps a little weak, he is happy to do whatever it takes to avoid conflict but occasionally cannot hide his internal struggle. Must have a beautiful, jazzy singing voice.

ARTHUR/SOLDIER – 20s. African-American. A soldier who has returned from the front, Arthur is honorable, handsome, a natural leader, and a hopeless romantic. He is devoted to the woman he left behind, and will do anything to find her and build their life together. Must have a beautiful singing voice. Angels should weep when he sings.
