BREAKDOWN

NOTES ON THE PRODUCTION:
This is a Mediterranean world, near the major trading posts of the world during the Renaissance. Characters should be reflective of all ethnic backgrounds including (but not limited to) Italian, Persian, North African, Croatian, Spanish, Hebrew, German, Indian, Egyptian, Turkish, Chinese ethnic backgrounds

Many actors will need to sing and some will also play instruments. All actors should be prepared to sing a folk song (or drinking song) in acapella in addition to the given sides. If actors play an instrument, they are encouraged to bring in a short folk inspired piece to play as well.

VIOLA:
Female or gender fluid/non-binary, 20’s. Attractive, athletic. Viola is smart as a whip, saucy (not always the most diplomatic), and really resourceful. Viola was raised the daughter of a prominent landowner in Messaline. After a disastrous shipwreck (that she believes killed her brother), she finds herself in a strange land and must fend for herself. Not knowing how dangerous this place might be, she opts to disguise herself as a young man, but finds herself attracted to her new boss, and attracting the attention of the most prominent women of the area. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

OLIVIA:
Female, 30’s to early 40’s. She is a beautiful, commanding woman, who has been raised to rule. Olivia is the Countess who through the recent death of her father and brother, has inherited one of the largest estates in Illyria. The grief of her brother’s death in particular, has left her disinterested in engaging with the outside world, until Ceasario (Viola disguised) shows up in her court, awakening her curiosity and desires that she finds immensely confusing. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

MARIA:
Female, 40's to 50's. A decent singer. She is savvy, clear-eyed, earthy and fearless. Maria understands the political games at play (and at risk) in the household. Maria is waiting woman to Olivia, the most prominent countess/landowner in Illyria. She is romantically entwined with Sir Toby, Olivia's uncle, who is a wild, party animal. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

SIR ANDREW AGUECHEEK:
Male, late 30's to 50's. A strong singer/harmonizer. Andrew has a lot of spirit, loves to party, is happy to put himself out there in most any situation, but doesn't read the social cues as quickly as one would hope. Sir Andrew is a wealthy knight visiting Illyria, who tends to get into unwarranted fights. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, he is on the hunt for a woman-friend/wife, and Sir Toby tries his best to engage him to Olivia (Sir Toby's niece) with the hope of having Andrew's fortune continue to personally benefit him. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

FESTE, THE FOOL:
Female, male, or gender fluid/non-binary, 50’s – 60’s. A strong singer. World-weary, a bit jaded, wickedly droll. Feste is wickedly observant, quick with a comeback, cutdown, sendup, or pun appropriate to the person or situation. Feste has an intuitive understanding of the politics of Illyria, and how to ingratiate him/herself. Feste (referred to mostly in the script as ‘Fool’) is an entertainer on staff at Countess Olivia’s court. He/She/They was a favorite of Olivia’s father before his death. He/She/They is clearly hurting a bit for cash, as their hand is always out for a donation from most anyone they entertain. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

FABIAN/THE CAPTAIN:
Male, 50’s-60’s. A strong singer. He is earthy, quick, and enjoys a good prank. Fabian is a worker on Olivia’s estate, and party buddy of Sir Toby’s. He mentions bear-baiting, and horses, so perhaps he runs the estates livery? Also plays: The captain of the ship that Viola and her brother were sailing on when it cracked and sank into the ocean. He is earthy, loyal, and decent. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

ORSINO:
Male, late 30’s or 40’s. Handsome, bright and athletic. He is both a warrior and a poet, and has a history of protecting Illyria in battles at sea. Count Orsino is one of the most prominent landowners in Illyria. He is madly in love with Countess Olivia, and is tortured by her complete indifference to him. His heart, his obsession, drives most of his actions in the play. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

SEBASTIAN:
Male or gender fluid/non-binary, 20’s. A decent singer. Athletic, handsome. Viola’s twin brother. Sebastian was raised in one of the more prominent families in Messaline. His and Viola’s father passed away when they were 13. On a recent journey at sea, the ship that carried both twins, crashed upon some rocks, split in two and sank. He’s taken up with Antonio, a sea warrior who has been at Sebastian’s side day and night for the past three months. Like any well bred son in a strange land, Sebastian aims to find his way to the court of the ruling houses. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.

ANTONIO:
Male, late 30’s or 40’s. A decent singer. He is a tough, loyal, athletic man, who falls hard for Sebastian, and determines to follow him come what may. A sea warrior (he objects to the term ‘pirate’, but he has been involved in significant sea battles in which he managed to steal property belonging to Orsino, so . . . you do the math). Antonio’s prior battles in this vicinity, make him notorious (and thus unsafe) in Illyria. NOTE: Actors of color are highly encouraged to submit.
