BREAKDOWN
George, a retired railroad porter and unofficial mayor of 132nd Street, keeps life neat and tidy. He finally meets his match when he befriends a down-on-her-luck stranger who is secretly the sweetheart he left behind in New Orleans 40 years before. A funny and touching look at the romantic travails of three couples learning about love in 1930s Harlem, this “musical comedy with heart” features a tuneful and jazzy period score by Harlem Renaissance songwriter J.C. Johnson, a colleague of artists such as Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and Billie Holiday

Billie - 60ish – The sweetheart George left behind 40 years ago, now a woman of experience. African American. Principal Role.
Archie – 30’s – Numbers runner, Roz’s long-time main squeeze, charismatic self-styled ladies’ man. African American. Principal Role.
Roz – 30’s – Beauty shop owner, Archie’s long-suffering woman, strong, passionate and brassy. African American. Principal Role.
Nelson – 20’s - Traveling bible and hymnal salesman, Ella’s beau, hopeful but insecure romantic. African American. Principal Role.
Ella – 20’s – George’s niece, staying with him for nursing school, sweet, innocent and with backbone. African American. Principal Role.
