BREAKDOWN

STORYLINE:
The war is finally over. General Michail proposes to Grotilde—so she skips ahead and plans the inevitable, but festive, divorce. Meanwhile, the weather is playing tricks on people, as is The President, and Grotilde’s son won’t accept the armistice. In this comedy of no manners, everyone is normible (both normal and terrible all at once).

GROTILDE NANCY SWAN
30s – 50s, female, any ethnicity.
She has completed her life’s work of losing the last 10 lbs; now she wants to take over America. Did she lose 610 lbs, 10 lbs, or only 600 lbs and is lying about the last 10? We may never know – but we need to believe she could have once been gargantuan. Sometimes a wild, untamed beast, other times deadpan. She doesn’t play by the rules of femininity, or any rules really - she is truly ferocious. She is the most desirable woman in America, because she is so uncompromising. Her energy center is her vagina. The actor must be able to access immensity through performance.

MICHAIL ITTEROD
40s –60s, male, any ethnicity.
A General in the army. Tired around the eyes, long bony fingers, a sad sack. He has been in love with Grotilde since he was in the womb. He sometimes accesses ferocity through performance, but he is not inherently ferocious. He seems like a mild-mannered man without any leadership qualities until he seizes the day. Must have both strength and fragility and also be open and playful.

BOY (SON SWAN)
18 – 20, male. Trans actors and actors of color are particularly encouraged to audition for this role.
Handsome, heroic, matter-of-factly self-interested, exceptionally single-mindedly committed to fixing his tank, not interested in much else. Doesn’t want to go home. Doesn’t believe in manners. Has testosterone-driven temper tantrums, where he explodes in terrifying anger. Also has a very endearing, naïve, wide-eyed quality.

GIRL
20s – 30s, female. Actors of color are particularly encouraged to audition for this role.
Tall and very pretty. She seems All-American, but Girl is a foreigner. We know this because she speaks English a little too formally and knows a few too many words. Sweet, trusting, naïve, wide-eyed, and open-hearted – even though (or perhaps because) everyone she knows and loves is dead. Bright and perceptive; trying to make the best of things; in a permanent state of trauma. Quick to cry, though she will continue to live and work through her tears.

PRESIDENT
40s – 50s, any gender, any ethnicity
Trim, athletic. Thoughtful. Attractive. Cat person. A confident, natural leader, but a failing America is giving him/her a nervous breakdown. When he/she is good, he/she is very very good, but when he/she is bad, he/she is horrid.

NOTES:
This play will involve a LOT of physical movement - we are seeking actors who are excited about exploring characters boldly through their bodies.
