BREAKDOWN
A Better Orpheus Inc. provides an unusual service—one that allows the living to communicate with the dead. When Nikki Corona loses her twin sister, A Better Orpheus puts her in touch with Orlando, a man dying too young. The ensuing love story leads to a journey through a vivid, surprising afterlife. In the rich literary tradition of magical realism and inspired by Dante's Inferno comes the world premiere of a new play by Obie Award-winning playwright and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter José Rivera. Jo Bonney will direct.
Manny/Priest/Bernardo/Eldon/Felipe - to be played by 1 actor
MANNY, a Latino male nurse, 30s/40s. Manny has the battered face, stocky build, and quick reflexes of a boxer, but a spiritual, kindly disposition – with a great smile. He’s the kind of nurse you want at your bedside during a medical crisis.
PRIEST, 40s/50s, your standard Roman Catholic priest giving Last Rites.
BERNARDO, a New York City cop, 30s/40s, veteran of Afghanistan. Bernardo is funny, bigger-than-life, manic and fierce – a man in uniform with no patience for slackers and civilians, who has followed orders his entire life and feels no guilt about it.
ELDON, 30s/40s, a British sailor and lighthouse keeper, dressed in 19th century clothes. A lover of cats, with a careless but sweet disposition, Eldon is riven by guilt that’s sunk him into a perpetual state of anxiety and remorse.
FELIPE, Orlando’s beloved brother, 40s, Latino, built like a body builder, thick, muscular, tattooed, long curly hair and beard. His eyes are large, soulful, and remarkably sensitive for such a hulking man. Completely no-nonsense.
Noelle/Paloma/Bobbi/Maria Sol - to be played by 1 actress
NOELLE, Orlando’s younger sister 30s, Latina, intense, strong, organized, a single, somewhat burned-out mother of three. She’s criticized for not having a sense of irony, though she tries. Despite herself, she deeply loves her dying brother.
PALOMA, an Argentine doctor, Orlando’s grandmother, 30s/40s. Paloma switches between a child-like innocence and wonder, and an adult sense of terrible responsibility. She’s filled with guilt and regret over her role in Argentina’s dirty war of the 1970s.
BOBBI, a WASP Ivy League graduate, 30s/40s, a bit entitled, with a quick mind and a fast, glib, and ironic tongue, who clearly understands her wrongdoing but is not sentimental in any way about it.
MARIA SOL, Orlando’s mother, Latina, 40s/50s, austere, expensively-dressed, a socialite and media star, brainy, powerful, verbally gifted, politically conservative, with a huge ego and sense of mission.
