BREAKDOWN

Seeking all ethnicities/abilities for all roles. Some previous classical work/training preferred.
All chorus members play individual roles outside of the chorus, and also work as an ensemble to help tell the story and generate the world of the play.

CLYTEMNESTRA / and As Cast:
Female, 30s to 40s. A queen. Used to being the most intelligent person in any company, she can be impatient with irrationality and ruthless with the weak or doubt-ridden. But she is also capable of tenderness and passion. Once she decides on a course of action, she is unstoppable. She is impossible for most people to read if she wants to be, and for the most part, that’s how she likes it.

IPHIGENIA / and As Cast:
Female, to play 10. A princess. Insightful, bright, and somehow special. She is haunted by her dreams because she doesn’t know why she knows what she knows.

AGAMEMNON / And As Cast:
Male, 40s to 50s. A king and the general of the Greek forces against Troy. The size of his part in history is greater than he would have wished. In the beginning, he is oppressed by a sense of responsibility–a fear of mishandling forces he doesn’t understand. He returns from the war changed. Under the swagger of the conqueror are shadows of shame and guilt. He now knows he is capable of what he would have once thought was unthinkable brutality. Vital, compelling, a leader in spite of himself.

ORESTES / And As Cast:
Male, 20s to 30s. A prince. He has lived in exile since childhood and has a damaged, alien quality, a dark intelligence. He does not wish to be a tragic hero, and would refuse his identity if he could. He has never felt in control of his fate and longs for invisibility.

CASSANDRA / And As Cast:
Female, 20s to 30s. A former princess of Troy. Now that her country has been destroyed, Agamemnon has brought her to the House of Atreus as his concubine—the human spoils of war. But, far from being cowed, she terrifies those around her. Cursed by Apollo, she is his unwilling priestess and prophetess. She sees everyone’s fate, including her own, and speaks truths that no one wants to hear. When visions of the future come, they consume and disorient her and are always unwelcome.

ELECTRA / And As Cast:
Female, 20s to 30s. A princess, yet she lives like a household servant. Most of her life has been spent circling her mother in an obsessive hatred that might be confused with obsessive love. She has a kind of creature energy, and is watching, wary, sly, and quick.

CHORUS A / WATCHMAN / And As Cast:
Male, 40s – 50s. Earthy, folk wise, trustworthy.

CHORUS B / APOLLO / And As Cast:
Male, 30s to 50s. Cool, slightly otherworldly, compelling.

CHORUS C / ATHENA / And As Cast:
Female, 30s to 50s. Reasoned, questioning, just.

CHORUS D / And As Cast:
Female, 30s to 50s. Fierce, frightening, decisive—allied with Clytemnestra.

CHORUS F / NURSE / And As Cast:
Female, 50s to 80s. Older, ironic, cool.

CHORUS G / And As Cast:
Female, 50s to 80s. Motherly, capable, warm.

CHORUS H / And As Cast:
Female, 50s to 70s. An unpredictable, ancient soul, powerful.

CHORUS I / And As Cast:
Female, Teens to 30s. Young, questioning, impulsive, ultimately just.
