BREAKDOWN

John Proctor - (30s to 40s) A farmer with a quiet confidence and an unexpressed, hidden force. Has a sharp and biting way with hypocrites.

Reverend Hale - (late 20s to mid 40s) A tight-skinned, eager-eyed intellectual. Called to Salem to ascertain witchcraft, he has the pride of the specialist whose unique knowledge has at last been publicly called for.

Reverend Parris - (30s to 40s) A widower, Parris is Salem village’s third preacher in seven years. He is insecure of his position in the parish, a suspicious and fearful man.

Deputy-Governor Danforth - (40s to 60s) A grave man, of some humor and sophistication that does not, however, interfere with an exact loyalty to his position and his cause.

Tituba - (20s to 50) Reverend Parris’ slave, sometimes dances and “conjures” with the girls in the forest. The first to be accused of witchcraft due to her vulnerable position.

Betty Parris - (18+ to play younger) Reverend Parris’ daughter, ten years old.

Ann Putnam - (30s to 50s) A twisted soul and death-ridden woman, haunted by dreams.

Thomas Putnam - (30s to 50s) A well-to-do, hard-handed and avaricious landowner.

Rebecca Nurse - (50 to 70s) A charitable and devoutly religious woman. Gentleness exudes from her.

Francis Nurse - (30s to 50s) A wealthy farmer and landowner, well-respected by the other villagers.
