SEEKING

Equity Actors for NATIVE SON by Nambi E. Kelley and MEASURE FOR MEASURE by William Shakespeare. Both plays will be performed in rotating repertory by a company of 10 actors at The Duke on 42nd Street in Summer 2019. See breakdown for specifics. Actors will be cast in both plays.
Performers of all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and abilities are encouraged to attend.

PREPARATION

Prepare one (1) Shakespearen monologue of no more than two (2) minutes in length. Be prepared to additionally present one (1) contemporary monologue of no more than (2) minutes in length upon request.

BIGGER – African-American man of 20.

THE BLACK RAT – African-American male 20s, the voice inside Bigger’s head. The physical manifestation of Bigger’s double consciousness, or how Bigger sees himself through the eyes of others.

MARY – Caucasian female, early 20s, edgy and simultaneously precious.

JAN – (pronounced JAN as in January) Caucasian male, 30s, well-intentioned with an edge, also plays STORE OWNER, POLICE #2, and others.

HANNAH – African-American female, early 40s, tough, broken, the edge of anger, plays a variety of roles.

BUDDY – African-American male, teens, soft, a follower, also plays NEGRO CLERK, JACKSON (offstage voice), and others.

BESSIE – African-American female, teens to mid-20s, alcoholic, also plays VERA, LESLIE (offstage voice), and others.

MRS. DALTON – Caucasian female, late 40s to early 50s, blind and well-intentioned, also plays AGENT and others.

BRITTEN – Caucasian male, 40s-50s, main investigator, thrives on mischief; also plays NEWSREEL V.O., MOVIE V.O., POLICE #1, and others.

Seeking a company of 10 highly versatile actors to play the following roles:

DUKE (Vincentio) - the ruler of Vienna, a scholarly ruler more interested in philosophy than ruling.

ANGELO - an older noble, chosen by the Duke to rule in his absence.

ISABELLA - a devout young novitiate to the order of Saint Clare, brother to Claudio.

ESCALUS - a kindly old lord of the Viennese court, he doesn’t approve of extremity or severity.

CLAUDIO - a young gentleman of Vienna, brother to Isabella.

LUCIO - a fop who spends most of his time in the brothels and revels in dirty jokes.

PROVOST - an older man who oversees the jail and its prisoners.

JULIET - a young woman and Claudio’s betrothed, she is pregnant.

FRIAR PETER THOMAS - a monk, helps the Duke with his deception.

MISTRESS OVERDONE - a boisterous woman who runs the local brothel.

Other roles to be played by members of the company:

JUSTICE - a Judge who consults with Angela and Escalus on how best to reinforce the law.

ELBOW - a clownish constable who thinks he is smarter and more important than he is.

FROTH - a foolish and drunken young gentleman of Vienna.

ABHORSON - the city’s executioner, a cruel man who delights in his work.

BARNADINE - a murderer who has been in jail for 9 years.
