BREAKDOWN

Set in an under-funded public school in Newark, Surely Goodness and Mercy by rising playwright Chisa Hutchinson, tells the story of a bible-toting boy with a photographic memory who befriends the cantankerous old lunch lady. Against all odds, Tino and Bernadette help each other through the mess of growing up and growing old.

Surely Goodness and Mercy has spent the last year charming audiences across the country. Now, Keen is honored to bring this vibrant new play to New York for the first time.

Seeking:

TINO
Black Male, 18+ to play 12 years old. An odd but brilliant little boy. Has a photographic memory and an intense curiosity which presently is laser-focused on the Bible. He does not have many friends, but he really should because he’s a sweetheart and would literally give you the food off his lunch tray.

ALNEESA
Black Female, late 30’s/early 40’s. Tino’s aunt. No-nonsense, uses abuse as a short-cut to correcting foolish behavior because she gotta go to work and don’t got time for the bullshit. She’s the kind of impatient that could only come from being forced to raise a kid despite never having wanted any.

DEJA
Black or Latinx Female, 18+ to play 12 years old. Troubled, ham-fisted, and a little hood. She lives with both her parents but might be better off if they’d just get a divorce already because she always gets lost in their drama. When someone finally pays attention to her, she latches on pretty fiercely and is loyal as the day is long.

BERNADETTE
Black Female, 60’s. A lunch lady who’s cantankerous in that way that makes you wonder how she ever got a job working with kids. She cares, though. For real. And she may not form attachments easily, but once she does, she’s ride-or-die. Her kitchen’s clean even if her language ain’t.

*VOICE OF THE PREACHER
Black Male, 40’s/50’s, a terrific storyteller and surprisingly progressive. Actor also plays VOICE OF THE PRINCIPAL— Black Male 50’s, overworked and just taking it one day at a time now, but probably had so much energy and optimism at the start of their career. Actor will not appear on stage.

**VOICE OF THE TEACHER
Black Female, 30’s, pedantic and stubbornly wrong. Will be voiced by an actress in the cast.

* This will be an 8 week contract (tech and run only) for 1 Male actor
** This will be voiced by actress in cast
