BREAKDOWN

Life Could Be a Dream - By Roger Bean

First Rehearsal - 8/12/2019

Closing - 9/7/2019

DENNY VARNEY: Five years after high school graduation, Denny still lives with his mother, goofing off in the family basement instead of working for a living. Denny’s lack of ambition and discipline have always been his downfall.

EUGENE JOHNSON: Denny’s best friend and co-conspirator, Eugene works hard just to stay in step with Denny’s fast-moving schemes. During most days, Eugene works for his Dad down at the Springfield Sweet Shoppe, but at night he cuts loose with his fellow Crooning Crab Cakes during singing and dancing practice in Denny’s basement.

First Rehearsal - 12/16/2019

Closing - 3/15/2019

El Gallo (Male, High Baritone, 30-45*) As the narrator of the piece, he is the liaison between the audience and the action onstage. He is warm, cordial, and inviting to the audience, yet with darker moments.

Luisa (Female, Legit Soprano, 16-26*) As a young lover, she is in love. She is in love with love, the idea of love, the idea of being in love and indeed everything remotely romantic.

Matt (Male, Baritone, 16-26*) As a young lover, he is deeply in love.

Hucklebee and Bellomy (Males, Baritone, 45-60*) Blustery and Boisterous. Duo and team. Strong comedic timing a must. Fathers of Matt and Luisa. Always arguing and bickering, but secretly plotting together for the marriage of their children

Henry and Mortimer (Males, 30-60*) Foolish comic actors who move the action while not seeming to contribute anything of substance. As performers their day has long past. Henry can play grand characters and recite Shakespeare, but with very little success these days. May be asked to speak in an English accent.

The Mute (Male or Female, age open) The Mute serves many functions—setting props as characters need them, assisting El Gallo, and becoming the wall separating the families. While omnipresent the character must also have the ability to fade into the background. This is a functional character that sometimes interacts with the others.

FOUNTAINHEAD (JOHN)

Fountainhead is a successful computer programmer and enterprenure. He is 38 years old, white, and lives on Philadelphia’s Main Line. He has a wife of seven years, and a son, he hides his smoking crack habit from them both, although his son has figured out his dad is smoking something he probably shouldn’t be.

LANA MAE HOPKINS: Lana Mae runs the Wishy-Washy Washateria. In a rocky marriage, she has chosen to ignore signs of her husband’s philandering. Her thoughts regarding marriage and love are throwbacks to the fifties, and Katie helps show her the way to break free from her internal prison. She dresses brightly, her hair is larger than normal, and she lives her life through colorful Southern sayings. Cheerful and bighearted; a real diamond-in-the-rough. (Mezzo-alto with strong belt.)

KATIE LANE MURPHY: Katie secures a job working for Lana Mae in the Laundromat, and sets out to help Lana Mae break free from her husband. At the same time, Katie is struggling with her own obsession with her ex-boyfriend, who still figures prominently in her life.
