Author’s Note: These are characters who know their dramatic functions intrinsically, and have been used to fulfilling them in certain ways. Hedda changes all of that now.
Hedda
Mid-20s to 30; a fresh version of Ibsen’s complex, somewhat neurotic, sometimes cruel anti-heroine; unlike the rest of the cast, Hedda is aware that she is a character in a play and is determined to gain control over her fate; also aware of the passage of time and history of the world in the years since the play has been written, she plays in both a classical and contemporary milieu with great facility
George
late 20s to mid-30s; Hedda’s husband, a University Research Fellow; a grown-up little boy, he is weak-willed and unimaginative;
Aunt Julia
60s; George’s maiden aunt, whom she dotes upon; CAST. Others will be seen as possible replacement or understudy.
Thea
Mid-20s to 30; Hedda’s pretty girlhood friend; champion of Eilert; she is hopelessly romantic and bravely steadfast
Eilert
late-20s to mid-30s; a dissipated Bohemian, possibly genius academic competing with George for a University position; former lover of Hedda; recovering alcoholic
Judge Brack
40s-50s; a family friend of the Tesman’s; well-respected in public, but a letch and blackmailer in private
