BREAKDOWN

Looking for a cast of 7 versatile, diverse Actor/Singers who move, for the West Coast premiere of this retelling of Oliver Twist set in modern-day Brazil, with book & lyrics by Karen Zacarías and music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. We’re looking for a talented ensemble of actors who can tell the story, and we encourage experienced stage actors of all backgrounds to audition. We are especially interested in casting Latinx, Afro-Caribbean, and African-American actors in this production. The Director is Robert Castro, with choreography by Tamica Washington-Miller, and musical direction by Richard Miller.

The story is a joyful retelling of the Dickens classic, where Oliver is now “Oli”, an innocent but smart girl who changes all the lives around her, including Iemanja, the goddess of the sea. The premise is that a troupe of actors about to perform Oliver Twist find themselves on the wrong set, which allows the actors to question some of Dickens’ original story while making it relevant to today. The show tackles issues of poverty, inequity, greed, and betrayal in a way that’s easy for young people to understand. The show’s score will be performed by a live Brazilian band.

The show is geared for ages 6 and up, but MainStreet shows never talk down to the audience – the opposite – we believe that children are inherently imaginative and smart. The sophisticated production values, the fabulous live music and the universal message about generosity and hope should appeal to all ages.

OLI: [Female, 20’s to play a child of 9-11] Mezzo G2-D4: A pure, innocent, kind and smart little girl.

IEMANJA: [Female, Any Age] Mezzo A2-E3: The Goddess of the sea. IEMANJA sees the good in OLI and follows her journey carefully. (Also plays “The Judge” and “The Director”)

ACTOR 1/ROSA MARIA: [Female, 40-60] Alto G2-C3: A fearful, rich woman. Rosa Maria is a widow, who lives in a high-rise and has little use for the people who live in the favelas (slums), until OLI shows her that kindness can make the world a better place.

ACTOR 2/FALCÃO: [Male, 40 – 60] Baritone C2-D4: A charismatic con man, who always shows up when there’s money to be made.

ACTOR 3/SYKES: [Male, 25 – 40] Bari/Tenor C2-G3: A smooth-talking, crooked, unredeemable policeman.

ACTOR 4/NANCÍ: [Female, 20 – 30] Alto G3-C3: A world-weary young woman, who works for FALCÃO but dreams of a better life. She takes pity on OLI and tries to protect her.

ACTOR 5/ZÉ ESQUIVA: (Male, 20’s to play a young teenager) a crafty, sly, clever boy whose livelihood depends on picking pockets and helping FALCÃO with his cons. He dreams of being a Futbol player.
