BREAKDOWN

NOTE: The roles in this production will primarily be cast as African American, so in terms of dialect actors are encouraged to imagine their characters (or their families) having migrated from the Deep South.

AUNT ELLER - Female, late 40’s/50’s African American. Aunt Eller carved out a successful farm as a single woman in the Oklahoma Territory. She is tough, resourceful, earthy and strong. Flinty sense of humor, and big heart. Strong singer, good mover. Voice: Mezzo (G3 to F5)

CURLY - Male, 30’s, African American. Strapping, sexy, strong with a very decent core. Curly has made his living as a rancher/cowman to date, but is getting ready to settle down. He is magnetic to women, so could easily be taken for a player, but there is something fundamentally decent about the guy. Strong baritone. Voice: Baritone (C3 to F#4)

LAUREY - Female, mid to late 20’s, African American. Attractive, feisty, with a quick wit. Laurey works on her Aunt’s farm in the Oklahoma territory. She is as comfortable milking a cow as she is baking a pie. Uncertain about where to give her heart, Laurey longs for something more exciting than the routine life of the prarie. Soprano. Voice: Soprano (C4 to A5)

WILL PARKER - Male, late 20’s, early 30’s, African American. Will works as a rancher/cowman in the Oklahoma Territory. He is a terrific horseman, and is less skillful with women. He is madly in love with Ado Annie, and spends every hour of every day is focused on winning her over. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Baritenor. Very strong dancer. Voice: Tenor (D3 to F4)

ADO ANNIE -

Female, mid to late 20’s. Not skinny, zaftig. Ado Annie ‘rounded up’ a bit in the last year, and it’s completely changed her relationship to men. Boys never noticed her, know she seems magnetic to them, and she is intoxicated by the attention. She is funny, sweet, energetic, and rambunctious. She is also naïve, and a bit slow on the uptake. Mezzo/belt, strong mover/dancer. Voice: Soprano (C4 to F5)

JUD - Male, 30’s to early 40’s, African American. Jud runs Aunt Eller’s farm in the Oklahoma Territory. He is a skillful farmhand, but tends to stick to himself. Quiet, brooding, dangerous and sensitive. He is in love with Laurey, but doesn’t have the romantic/communication skills to win her over, so struggles with the depth of his desires. There is definitely something scary about Jud. Strong bass/baritone. Good mover. Voice: Baritone (D2 to D?4)

ALI HAKIM - Male, 30’s to 40’s, MIDDLE EASTERN (or ethnically ambigious). Ali is a peddler in the Oklahoma Territory. He travels from town to town selling hard to get items out on the prarie; from the most practical (egg beaters) to the most delicate (garters). There are advantages to being on the move, especially if you’re attractive and exotic to the ladies: Ali definitely enjoys the romantic dalliances the life affords, but commitment, marriage? Not really part of his plan. Excellent comic timing. Voice: Baritenor (D2 to F#4)

CARNES - Male, late 40’s to 50’s, African American. Ado Annie’s father. Carnes is a cantankerous s.o.b., who doesn’t suffer fools gladly, and doesn’t have much time for romance. He’s carved out a living for himself and his family in the Oklahoma Territory, and expects any man asking for his daughter’s hand to be able to do the same. Tough and pragmatic. Strong singer/good mover. Voice: Tenor (F3 to F4)

CORD ELAM - Male, late 30’s to 40’s, African American is a farmer and local Judge in this section of the Oklahoma Territory. Strong singer/dancer/mover. Voice: Baritone (G?2 to A4)
