SYNOPSIS:
Alaina and Alex are strangers when Alaina and her husband adopt Alex's baby girl, but they form an unexpected bond that transforms them both. Chronicling 25 years of their tumultuous and powerful relationship, Alaina and Alex make up the rules as they go along, colliding with their families, jobs and obligations, determined to ensure the child turns out okay. Narrated by Sara, the young woman that baby grows up to be, My Real Mother is filled with humor and heart and set to a lush, contemporary musical theatre score.

SEEKING:

ALAINA (Female, 50+) A spiritual, emotionally connected woman coming into her own a little later in life. Her innate sense of empathy has always led her to put everyone else before herself. Loving so easily has often lead her to problems, but she embraces them. Not without fire, she has a lot of self-awareness and knows she's not perfect. She works as a teacher and school counselor. Soprano/mix to F.

ALEX (Female, 25) An impetuous and headstrong young woman. Often the brunt of life's cruelties, instead of wallowing in victimhood she unabashedly goes after her heart's desires. This has left her rather selfish, but not in a narcissistic way; she loves so hard and is scared to lose it. She is a hair stylist. Mix/belt to D.

SARA (Female, 20s) Alex's biological and Alaina's adopted daughter. A bright, playful, sardonic, well adjusted young lady. Curious and articulate, she grows up to be a nurse. Anchors the show by acting as the narrator before joining the action later in the play. Mix/belt to Eb.

JASON (Male, 30s) A sensitive, well-rounded man who happens to be Mr. Mom. His laser focus on being a great parent gets in the way of everything else in his life. Deeply protective, he can be a little obstinate and see things in black and white. He is a musician. Baritone to E.

DUNCAN/DOUG (Male, 22) A type-A personality pulled from the path he saw for himself. He finds change difficult. Very aspirational and a deep thinker. He has good intentions but has a hard time living in the now. Tenor to A.

JACK/IE (Male/Female 40s+) A well-humored adoption counselor and mediator. The consummate psychologist, they can see things from many angles and have great communication skills. Able to tame the wildest beasts. Also plays other featured characters throughout the play.

CHRISTIAN (Male, 20s) Alaina's first born son from her previous marriage. Also plays other featured characters throughout the play. Strong mover and quirky character creator.

LIAM (Male, 20s) Alaina's middle son from her previous marriage. Also plays other featured characters throughout the play. Strong mover and quirky character creator.

DANIELLA (Female, 20s) Alaina's youngest daughter from her previous marriage. Also plays other featured characters throughout the play. Strong mover and quirky character creator.
