BREAKDOWN

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES AND UNDERSTUDIES:

MUNDIE – 60’s. A successful and wealthy businessman, a man of influence and power, far removed from his younger life when he was a playwright. We meet Mundie in his current life… urbane, successful, confident. Then we’re taken to his past, where we see him as an ambitious, impetuous artist, full of himself, prone to recklessness and possessed of a serious lack of judgment. Hungry for life, passionate, willing to risk everything, hopelessly self-involved. He wrote a single play when he was 30, enormously successful, but now forgotten.

LILAC – Adult to play a child and adult. Sister of Poe. We see her in the past as a child and now as a somewhat childlike adult. She is ethereal and sweet, but alternately a hellion. She’s like a changeling, a fairy child, innocent and naïve, fragile one moment and ferocious the next. Desperate and unpredictable.

POE – Adult to play child and adult. Brother of Lilac. We see him in the past as a child and now as a somewhat childlike adult. He is odd, like a sprite, innocent, charming, naïve, until you glimpse the wild child within, who can emerge and unleash chaos. A gremlin, can be dangerous.

MCPHEE – 30’S. An army vet. Charismatic, attractive, voluble. Full of high spirits and big dreams, buoyant, kind of manic in his joy, but capable of turning and becoming violent, dangerous.

GILBERT - 40’s. Mundie’s theatrical attorney and erstwhile friend. He frequently gives advice to younger Mundie…business advice, investment advice, life advice. Intelligent, opinionated, full of suggestions. Married to Antonia and claims to be in love with her. Will play some other roles.

SCHUYLER – L40’s-L50’s. Father of Lilac and Poe, married to Elsie. A brilliant, local director of an amateur production of Mundie’s play. He’s a Svengali-like figure…on Nantucket. Charismatic, opinionated, charming, but dangerously controlling. You don’t want to cross him. Will play some other roles.

JORGE LUIS BORGES – 60’S. Famous Argentinian writer. His writing is enormously important to Mundie. Infinitely wise, literate, witty. Borges appears throughout the play, sometimes unexpectedly, sometimes in other guises to offer advice, wisdom, commentary. May play some other roles.

ELSIE/SHE – 30’s. ELSIE: Beautiful, sensitive, lovely. Married to Schuyler, mother to Lilac and Poe. She’s was the leading lady of the amateur Nantucket production of Mundie’s famous, but now forgotten play. Longing for Mundie to see her on stage, she is devastated to learn he’s uninterested in seeing an amateur production. Terrified by her husband’s jealousy and insistence on controlling her. SHE: Infinitely smart, self-possessed, beautiful, she and Mundie meet by chance and fall in love at first sight. She’s unimpressed by Mundie’s stature and accomplishments. Incisive and honest.

ANTONIA/ALICE DELANEY – 30’s- E40’s. ANTONIA. Charismatic, exciting, passionate…a woman of mystery, she speaks many languages, studies flamenco and has a business degree from Wharton! She’s miserable in her marriage to Gilbert…but is she? Passionately in love with Mundie, she plans to leave Gilbert for him…but will she? ALICE DELANEY: A political correspondent, drama critic and skin care editor for a magazine. Smart and likes a good time. She’s has a romantic attachment to Mundie and is getting fed up with his lack of consistency and refusal to commit to their relationship.

AUBREY COFFIN/SECRETARY 35 – 45. AUBREY COFFIN – a Nantucket cop, no nonsense, serious about her job, unimpressed by Mundie’s status, it’s surprising to find out that she too acted in an amateur production of his play and she’s a little put out that Mundie didn’t come to see it. SECRETARY to Mundie, a temp, fascinated that a powerful businessman once wrote a play which she knows well, because she performed in it in high school!
